In order to draw a complete picture of Abraham's life, Klinghoffer relies on the Talmudic stories as well as the tales of the medieval rabbis, like Maimonides, to trace Abraham's life from his birth in Mesopotamia to his burial in Machpelah. Thought provoking journey with Abraham and God

There is a wide range of ratings for this book - the next few give very poor ratings (1 star), while the latter reviews give 5. I've just finished reading it and can concur with most of what both groups of reviewers have said.

On the up side, the book paints vivid and dramatic pictures of Abraham's life, his journeys, his relationships and his God. Klinghoffer argues strongly and well for Abraham's role in being an evangelist for monotheism.

On the down side, Klinghoffer does treat the Oral Torah as almost more inspired than the Torah itself. His arguements about Isaac are incomprehensible. He introduces various bits of information that I found bizarre.

But, put together I, for one, found the book deeply thought provoking. He helped me get a real sense of Abraham the man, and the societies in which he moved. Many bits of Oral Torah trivia were really interesting and I am grateful to have them.

I am a theology student, in training to become a pastor in a conservative demonination. I found the book well worth reading.

An astonishing and vivid experience

Klinghoffer has written a brilliant book: a combination detective story -- who was this patriarch with the half-sister marriage and the bombshell concubine and the funny relationship with his kid? -- and meditation. (If the book were an album, its title would be "Abraham Comes Alive.")
To write a biography of a pre-modern figure -- a man who stands somehow at the back of much of the modern world, the way D.W. Griffith hangs at the back of every movie theater, mildly grinning -- Klinghoffer has performed an immense amount of digging. By definition, there are no photos, letters, phone records, eyewitness accounts, no talkative siblings or rivalrous contemporaries; to begin with, there are just the stones and weather of the Bible. Klinghoffer excavates his story's bones from that source, pressing also into Midrash and a shamingly wide range of archaeological and critical sources. What he comes up with is an intensely readable story about one of history's great, pivotal figures; a lone man in an dusty region of the world who gave birth to the three of the world's major religions. (Birth, and also the roiling within families, is one of Klinghoffer's consistent interests in the book.)
The book is about founding a tradition, but it's also a story. Abraham rejected his own father's idolatry, found the first modern path to God, fought armies, dealt with the problems of love, marriage, fatherhood, kinship, family; one of the surprises encountered again and again in Klinghoffer's story is how much of our modern turbulence - essentially, doubt versus fidelity, and the many avenues that conflict seeks for expression -- Abraham's own life anticipates. The approach to whether miracles in the bible are "literally" true is a great feat of perception: they're "true" because they were necessary to our own understanding and acceptance of God. The author's passages on the love between Sarah and Abraham read as a kind of sweet, best-case marriage: as he sees them, the two are halves of a whole, Abraham the accepting, understanding heart, Sarah the stern, unbending head; as in any relationship, partners will fill out the available role. Klinghoffer takes the reader through the story we half-know, giving it blood and muscle along the way. It's a daring, dramatic thing to have pulled off; at a time when those three religions (in the way children in the Bible so often do) have come into conflict, it feels almost necessary.

Fascinating, challenging, and moving

Having read Mr. Klinghoffer's wonderful memoir "The Lord Will Gather Me In," I had high hopes for this new book. Even so, "The Discovery of God" exceeded my expectations.
Using Jewish tradition (oral and written) to flesh out the account of Abraham's life in Genesis, Klinghoffer paints an incredibly vibrant picture of the the patriarch. As he tells this story, he also provides fascinating discussions of the cannons of Biblical exegesis, rabbinical scholarly traditions, and the sources of conflict between traditional and modernist scholars. This is weighty stuff, but Klinghoffer writes so beautifully, and has such an eye for the interesting detail, that the book never sags--rather, it soars.
All in all, "The Discovery of God" is a fascinating journey through the life of the man who Jews, Christians, and Muslims all can rightfully call "Father Abraham." Highly recommended.

Poignant and pensive

The descriptions make me want to love this book - the color of each person's skin, the way the mother's hands knead the bread, the thought of having no floor to stand on. These are all wonderful. The gradual development of Toswiah/Evie into her own person is also nice, although I thought she had it pretty much together, even at the start. There isn't much action in this book, and sometimes I felt like the book's plot was over, even before the book had really started. You knew the family had to go into hiding; you knew the mother turned to religion. But the descriptive characteristics of each person carry a lot of the story along. They are worth savoring.

The book I read was Hush, By JacquelineWoodson. This book was a fictional, drama, ethinic book.The most obvious problem in the book was the family's race, being african american.

A summary of the book Hush would be based around a girl whose birthname is Toswiah, which is later changed to Evie when put into the witness protection program. Toswiah faced many problems in this novel. After being used to living in Colorado with her family, grandmother, and having her best friend live down the street, everything changed in a matter of a day. The day and event was a hard decision for her father, who was a police officer. He witnessed a rasict homicide on a teenage boy by his two white partners. After days of thinking of what he should do, he came forward to the police department, who witnessed and interrogated witnesses. In the mean time, the two cops harassed, and called the family. The witness protection program relocated their family, giving them new identities, and they could not come into contact with any of their family or friends from Colorado, until the police department arrested the two cops. Toswiah is forced to reinvent herself and not think of the past at all.

The book was interesting becuase it shows how certain people, even cops, deal with racial problems and how it affects their families. One wrong move by anyone, can affect all parties involved. The book was also inspiring because it shows how a young girl could be so courageous and have the ability to put up with leaving family and friends, to reinvent herself and not say anything about her past.

Possibilities and questions the book raises are how did the family and friends live after they left Colorado? What ever happened to the two cops and their families? How the whole family is affected by this tradgedy? It only fully explains Toswiah and her sisters thoughts and views, but leaves out the effects this had on everyone else.

Arguments I would have against the author would be Toswiah shouldn't, have to deal with rascism and relocation. This also lead to her fathers attempted suicide and the emotional breakdown of her mother,all of which is alot for a child of her age.

The book taught me and affected me by showing me how a person, even a cop cant be trusted. They can give you one impression and totally change it in a matter of seconds. Which can affect the lives of everyday people. It shows how rascism and still exists in society, regardless of the occupation. It also shows how a young girl can deal with adult like problems at a young age, and adapt to different things when needed to.

My overall opinion of the book was it was a very good, interesting, inspiring, and a book some people can relate to, because we are all aware that these problems exist, but not to this extent. Advice I have for potential readers of this book would be to look and see how a young person can relate to such harsh opinions and impressions we have in our own society, and how every little thing can affect a person no matter how minimal.

Witness Protection Program

It has never really mattered to Toswiah's family that they are one of the few black families in town. Her father is a police officer, her mother a teacher, and her older sister is a popular cheerleader. Toswiah has a best friend and she loves Colorado. Everything is going well for them. Even though her father is the only black police officer on the force, the rest of the police officers are as close as family to them.

Then her father witnesses two white officers shoot a black teenager. They say they thought he was in a gang and was reaching for a gun. Toswiah's father saw that his hands were fully visible, up in the air, and the police officers shot him anyway. He agonizes over the decision he has to make. Should he testify in this trial and help to put his fellow police officers in jail? Or should he follow the code of the police officers and turn the other way, pretending he didn't see anything? He decides to testify.

Suddenly Toswiah's world is turned upside-down. Her family leaves their home in the middle of the night. She will now be known as Evie, and moved to a different place to start over as a different person, telling lies instead of history. Being in the witness protection program is hard on the entire family. Toswiah's mother has found religion and lost herself. Toswiah's father sits all day by the window, feeling like he somehow made the wrong decision. Toswiah's sister is angry at everyone, especially her father, and is doing all that she can to get away. Toswiah is proud of her father and thinks he did the right thing, but she is sad that everything is falling apart. Can this family come together and survive this?

I liked Toswiah and her narration, and I liked the flashbacks to the times before the family had to move. I was disappointed in the parents, though. They were set up as such strong people and such good parents before the trial. But then when their children needed them to be stable and supportive, they completely fell apart. It didn't seem to fit with their earlier personalities.

About the Author
DAVID M. HILLIS is the Alfred W. Roark Centennial Professor in Integrative Biology and the Director of the Center for Computational Biology and Bioinformatics at the University of Texas at Austin, where he also has directed the School of Biological Sciences. Dr. Hillis has taught courses in introductory biology, genetics, evolution, systematics, and biodiversity. He has been elected to the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, awarded a John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Fellowship, and has served as President of the Society for the Study of Evolution and of the Society of Systematic Biologists. He served on the National Research Council committee that wrote the report BIO 2010: Transforming Undergraduate Biology Education for Research Biologists. His research interests span much of evolutionary biology, including experimental studies of evolving viruses, empirical studies of natural molecular evolution, applications of phylogenetics, analyses of biodiversity, and evolutionary modeling. He is particularly interested in teaching and research about the practical applications of evolutionary biology.�DAVID E. SADAVA is the Pritzker Family Foundation Professor of Biology, Emeritus, at the Keck Science Center of Claremont McKenna, Pitzer, and Scripps, three of The Claremont Colleges. In addition, he is Adjunct Professor of Cancer Cell Biology at the City of Hope Medical Center. Twice winner of the Huntoon Award for superior teaching, Dr. Sadava has taught courses on introductory biology, biotechnology, biochemistry, cell biology, molecular biology, plant biology, and cancer biology. In addition to Life: The Science of Biology, he is the author or coauthor of books on cell biology and on plants, genes, and crop biotechnology. For the past 15 years, he has investigated multi-drug resistance in human small-cell lung carcinoma cells with a view to understanding and overcoming this clinical challenge. At the City of Hope, his current work focuses on new anti-cancer agents from plants.�H. CRAIG HELLER is the Lorry I. Lokey/Business Wire Professor in Biological Sciences and Human Biology at Stanford University. He earned his Ph.D. from the Department of Biology at Yale University in 1970. Dr. Heller has taught in the core biology courses at Stanford since 1972 and served as Director of the Program in Human Biology, Chairman of the Biological Sciences Department, and Associate Dean of Research. Dr. Heller is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and a recipient of the Walter J. Gores Award for excellence in teaching. His research is on the neurobiology of sleep and circadian rhythms, mammalian hibernation, the regulation of body temperature, the physiology of human performance, and the neuro-biology of learning. Dr. Heller has done research on a huge variety of animals and physiological problems ranging from sleeping kangaroo rats, diving seals, hibernating bears, photoperiodic hamsters, and exercising athletes. Dr. Heller has extended his enthusiasm for promoting active learning through the development of a two year curriculum in Human Biology for the middle grades, and at the college level he directed the production of Virtual labs -- interactive computer based modules to teach physiology.�MARY V. PRICE is Professor of Biology, Emerita, at the University of California, Riverside and Adjunct Professor in the School of Natural Resources and the Environment at the University of Arizona. In “retirement,” she continues to teach and study, having learned the joy and art of scientific discovery as an undergraduate student at Vassar College and doctoral student at the University of Arizona. Dr. Price has mentored and published with independent-research students and has developed and taught general biology and ecology courses from introductory (majors and nonmajors) to graduate levels. She has particularly enjoyed leading field classes in the arid regions of North America and Australia, and the tropical forests of Central America, Africa, and Madagascar. Dr. Price’s research focuses on understanding the ecology of North American deserts and mountains. She has asked why so many desert rodents can coexist, how best to conserve endangered kangaroo rat species, how pollinators and herbivores influence floral evolution and plant population dynamics, and how climate change affects ecological systems.

Without going into the pros and cons of the AP Biology redesign, I think this book is a valuable tool in getting students to improve their application skills in biology. Nearly every chapter includes samples of research that integrates the chapter concepts into some sort of visual representation of data. It is not my favorite writing style...the opening paragraph often leaves the students reeling, but the authors then backtrack and progress through the information in more manageable small doses, which are generally quite well written. I do find the overall presentation to be helpful in getting students to see the big picture (Big Idea?!) without getting lost in too much extraneous info as many texts are wont to do. It is clearly not the case that "big idea" language was inserted as an afterthought and a new edition number was added, as appears to be the case with several other texts right now. Also, the accompanying ebook and web support is great, with added mini-lessons. the instructor pages are mostly intuitive, but I've had some frustrating moments trying to convince the computer to do things my way...it's a long learning curve...

I particularly like the Applying the Concept and Investigation sections that mimic AP Biology test questions. I would recommend this book to any AP Biology teacher.

Loved this. Author--please upload "Found" on Kindle.

I discovered this book by accident after seeing the movie Found. I couldn't find it on Kindle so I downloaded his other work. While this book will not appeal to a mass audience, it was just what I was in the mood for. Dark, actually really dark, but that's what I dug about it.

Please write more books! The world needs more authors like you.

This thoroughly revised edition includes a broad discussion of competencies mandated by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education and other bodies, current information on education technology, increased emphasis on scholarships related to curriculum development, and advice on obtaining institutional review board approval. Book necessary for a class, a must read for me, specialized in scope. Would not read for pleasure, certainly. Just as you'd expect a textbook--sometimes interesting, sometimes perfunctory. Book itself arrived with half the pages bent back and it is printed on cheap (newspaper-like) paper, but arrived in a timely manner, service was fine, good transaction otherwise.

Sacks, a neurologist and author of the popular The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat ( LJ 2/15/86), developed a serious interest in sign language and deafness after reviewing Harlan Lane's When the Mind Hears ( LJ 10/15/84 ) for the New York Review of Books . In this work, Sacks explores all facets of the deaf world--he meets with deaf people and their families and visits schools for the deaf, spending a good deal of time at Gallaudet University. As he writes, "I had now to see them in a new, 'ethnic light,' as people with a distinctive language, sensibility, and culture of their own." The work is divided into three broad sections, throughout which there are numerous, somewhat distracting footnote "excursions." Although there is a wealth of insight and information here, the book tends to drag for the average reader and may disappoint fans of Sacks's previous best seller. Recommended for scholars and graduate collections.

I'm seeing this book constantly compared to Sacks' "Hat" even though this work is in a completely different style. First of all, this is only on people who are deaf and their culture, while the title of Hat has "and other Clinical Tales" at the end. This book is in a similar style to Musicophilia and Awakenings, it takes on one subject and explores it in depth. So, while you don't get the varied clinical stories, you get a deep view on people who are deaf.
Although I agree with some other reviewers that the footnotes are tedious to read (my edition has them at the back of the book so there was a lot of flipping), it is, as always, an easily readable and informative text on the subject. I love how Sacks, through this and all his books, focuses on how people adapt to their "disabilities" even though they are seen as less than normal in our culture at large and makes you realize that they are not disabled, but differently abled, capable of everything "normal" people are.

Seeing what makes us human.

Looking at language without speech is mind blowing. Without language we do not share in human culture. We do not "think" without language. I truly believe that everyone should find the experiences of the deaf important and interesting on an emotional and intellectual level. This book was a great start for me.
While this book is dated, Oliver Sacks shares very valuable experiences by deaf people. He reviews some of the personal struggles of the deaf, their historic treatment by hearing people, some history of sign language, and the development of Deaf culture. It is helpful that Oliver Sacks starts initially from his own ignorance. He walks us through well researched insights, and he brilliantly lights our understanding of human thinking that comes from language development.

A door to the world of the Deaf

As a hearing person, I must admit that I never gave much thought at all to the Deaf, let alone Deaf culture. Sacks' Seeing Voices is a real eye opener in this regard. Sacks admits that he came at the problem of deafness from a medical/neurological perspective, and was quickly and radically changed by what he learned about the Deaf. Sacks passion is evident as he takes the reader through the history of Deaf culture, the struggles and successes of the Deaf. I now have a new appreciation of the Deaf, and their place in society, and their unique difficulties. This has opened a new channel in my mind, one which I intend to explore more fully in the future.

Gabi Yetter's book is not your usual guidebook, but really a sojourn into the heart of Cambodia, as seen through sensitive eyes and across several years and many miles of exploration. Gabi has an affinity for the people and their everyday lives and she rarely misses both the charms and the not-charms she encounters. As an expat, she came to Cambodia already skilled at looking at different cultures and being able to select out their gifts. This book is a compendium of such gifts, especially for those who,like Gabi and Skip Yetter, fulfill the dream of changing countries, lifestyles, and cultures and trying something entirely new. The photos are terrific and the writing easy to digest. It's got my vote for a great and useful guide to this part of Southeast Asia.

This Definitive Guide is definitely helpful

This is a concise, comprehensive and entertaining book that would be helpful for a tourist but invaluable for someone who wants to move to Cambodia for an extended period, told by an experienced traveler who has been in Cambodia long enough to know how things work there but not so long that she's forgotten what the transition was like.

You'd easily recoup the cost of the book with the money you saved just by reading the paragraph on the fair cost of a ride to town from the Phnom Penh airport. As an added bonus, you get brief summaries of the country's history and culture, invaluable tips on health care, food, networking, and apartment hunting, plus any number of facts you'd be unlikely to discover elsewhere. (Who knew foreigners tend to be charged more for electricity than locals or that police will fine you for driving with headlights on during the day, but not necessarily for driving without them at night?)

Even if you're thinking about moving to a different country than Cambodia, the book will get you thinking about any number of questions you might not have thought to ask.

This book gives you plenty to ponder without being ponderous, and includes links to a number of helpful Web sites and resources.

Full disclosure: I stayed as a guest of the author and her husband, so I'm biased, but I can vouch for the accuracy of everything I encountered that the book describes.

Tell it like it is!!!

I loved this book!!! I moved to Cambodia almost 3 years ago and WISH I had something like this back then!!!

The book is well written and flows nicely. There are no big, fluffy words (something that really annoys me when reading other books)...it is straight and to the point and gives you exactly the information you need.

What is written is informative and REAL! As a current resident of Cambodia, I can tell you what the author tells you is true...I loved how she added the way to say things in Khmer and how she seems to have spoken with real people living here to get you the information you need.

If moving to Cambodia, a definite MUST HAVE!!!
