About the Author

Cathy Birkenstein is a lecturer in English at the University of Illinois at Chicago. She has published essays on writing in College English, and, with Gerald Graff in The Chronicle of Higher Education, Academe, and College Composition and Communication.

My Ivy League mentor impressed by improvements I made using tips from this book

I am in a Ph.D. program at Cornell University, but having already completed an undergrad and a Master's degree, I thought my writing was pretty good. However, after using the tips from this book, my Ivy League professor told me my work had substantially improved. I absolutely recommend this book to anyone looking to improve their writing. I also recommend "Making Sense in the Life Sciences: A Student's Guide to Writing and Research" for anyone looking to help organize lots of information into a logical flow/argument.

A Major Resource for Incorporating Others' Ideas into a College-Level Argument

This book could be used for advanced HS students in its entirety. With scaffolding, the book is a fruitful resource for explaining and supporting the writing of the college level argument. The templates, though they may seem simplistic or mechanical, provide helpful models and scaffolds for the many "moves" in the written argument. The book doesn't cover rhetorical devices, but I have found that teaching each separately helps students.

The explicit professional examples and the templates address one of the greatest difficulties in the writing of so many students, incorporating quotations smoothly, what "They Say," and helping students maintain their voice in what "I say."

About the Author

Dr. Kreit is Professor of Medicine in the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. The best book to learn mechanical ventilation from physiology standpoint. It's not an easy one, but this is probably the only book ever published that explains all the basic concepts in full detail to make reader understand A to Z of it. You need some background knowledge about physiology. Very well written. Totally worth the money.

Best Bio on Nietzsche

I've read Kaufman's and Heidegger's not Salome's early experiential account, yes to some of Jasper's bio and this one by Liliane Frey-Rohn stands out as favorite. It's not Kaufman's philosophical approach, nor Jaspers, nor is it Heidegger's 'own' work, but this time a psychological approach.

The book presents Nietzsche in historical and chronological order, from his first book to his last and the various letters, dithyrambs, poems in between and then relates his ideas to his psychological - mental - perceptions, condition and views. The author continually is piecing the ideas with his nature, history and circumstances and ultimately, his last 11 years of insanity and that which led up to it.

The book contains the philosophical perceptions on Nietzsche's ideas and state of mind relations, but not in an overwhelming analysis, nor does it go on philosophical tangents of explanatory notes that detract from the overall picture, the whole, as many others do

So here is a book not only on the philosophy of Nietzsche in a chronological order, but it's coming from the mind of a close collaborator of Carl Jung and written in Jungian analysis. I can't think of a better book to be introduced to Nietzsche. Of course to go into depth to fully comprehend all of Nietzsche's thoughts, you must read him for that, but for a summary of his thoughts and meanings this is a great book.

Not difficult reading for such a complex subject. I read Nietzsche in school and always felt empty with out understanding .
Now that I am old and out of my mind all of it makes more sense. I was left thinking that Nietzsche and the Dalai Lama have some ideas in common> all events reoccur and continue...............

Original and heart-warming

I've got a bit bored of typical romance novels as late but had promised to read The Guestbook as part of the Gosling Girls book tour. Well, I'm glad I did because this isn't your usual style of chick lit rom-com novel. It's a real breath of fresh air!

Each chapter is dedicated to a particular date when guests are visiting and via The Guestbook we're treated to snippets of people's lives of those who stay in the cottage. Through these visitors leaving their messages we also learn about Annie and her life. There's a real mix of relatable characters that bring the cottage and story to life...some you'll love, some not so much (the awful Mrs Applecroft - I'm so glad she got her comeuppance!).

I like that my Kindle version had each person writing in a different font and their own identifiable writing style. You soon get to used to who's who and I really liked this style.

As I was reading I did think these people are very open and honest in the things that they write in this book for all to read and then on the next page:

"It seems that not having the pressure of talking face to face means that people can put what they really feel in this book."

Overall, an original heart-warming novel which will have you routing for Annie all the way!

Brilliant!!!!!

When I started this, I didn't think there would really be a plot- after all, a different person would be staying in the cottage every week, taking their part of the story with them, so nothing would be continually, right? But I couldn't have been any more wrong- there was, and it was amazing!

Annie Butterworth, a young widowed landlady, owns a cottage which she rents out to holiday makers for a few weeks at a time. She decides to add a guest book, to communicate with the guests, let them keep a bit of a diary and just make them feel at home.

Okay, so, first of all, this was absolutely hilarious. I read it at about half nine at night, so I couldn't laugh as hard as I wanted to, but I found myself giggling at multiple points in the book. Everything that happened with the various guests linked together and each one had their own font (handwriting) so returning guests were easy to recognise.

I loved how there was even a romance, formed not how it would in a normal book, but within this guest book! We got every aspect of it, purely from diary entries; some of it very cleverly done by it being the guests relaying the romance!

The same goes with Annie's history. I didn't think I would learn much about her or come to love her as much as I did, but by the end, I did. I also really loved Oliver; a funny, ironic writer, trying to win Annie's heart.

Normally this style of writing just doesn't work, but it did, and so, so well at that. It was a refreshing read, but had an amazing plot-line and there were more serious parts to break it up.

I really enjoyed The Guestbook. An unusual style, but with a full plotline and romance, it ticked every box for an adult chick-lit.

I couldn't get enough

The Guestbook follows the story of Annie Butterworth, a widowed cottage owner who opens doors to guests from everywhere, where every one of her guest will pen down their thoughts and experiences during their stay. This is because the book is an actual guestbook!

Since the entire book is written from every character's POV, we can get a glimpse of their experiences and thoughts as well as insight on the going of the plot. I really like the concept of the book as it's something entirely new and exciting! And Holly's use of different fonts for every character's entries is simply clever! I really enjoyed reading each character's story and their personalities shine through their entries.

There's a bit of a mystery that's embedded in the storyline. Who was Annie's husband? What happened to him? What's Annie's past with Olly? I guess predictability plays quite a huge role in the plot as I was waiting for the moment where Annie would realise that Olly actually cares for and loves her.

All in all, it's a great debut novel and I really enjoyed it! I wish there were more pages for me to indulge in! Funny, poignant and riveting as well as romantic. Don't miss The Guestbook! I couldn't get enough of the guests' entries and it's got everything: humour, heartbreak, loss, love.
