This is a fantastic book. Clear pictures of what is happening to help you out. I've always heard of "brain tanning". Never seen it done until now. Also has explanations of what you are doing followed by why and what will happen if you don't say manage to work all the brain oil into the leather or whatever

I found this book really good - for me

I found this book really good - for me, it was better than the military SAS survival books, because it gave more details, in a context and format that made better sense. I'm no expert - hence my purchase of the book - but after reading it and following along as I tried things in it, I find I am better able to perform many of the skills it covers - and thus, more confident in my ability to survive, which can help give an edge.

Excellent Book for both Purchasing and Supply Chain Management Professionals

I used this book as part of an independent study course that I took for my MBA program. The book provides an excellent review of the purchasing function within a supply chain context. The case studies are short and well written. Without being lengthy, the cases are direct, to-the-point and packed with a plethora of information that are ready for analysis. I highly recommend this book to both students and logistics & supply chain management professionals. As an invaluable reference source, I will be keeping this book as part of my library.

Real, practical advice that will improve your life

*Disclosure: I'm a friend of Hannah's and designed the cover of this book. But I wouldn't be writing this review if I didn't think its content was true.*

A lot of books in the self help category are chocked full of mysticism and guru-speak. You know the stuff: "Toltec shaman Daniel Sujarit will teach you how transcendental meditation and Ayurveda yoga positions can free your consciousness from lure of the ever-expanding ego so you can awaken and transform into an enlightened member of the quantum Earth."

Uh... what?

Well this book is the opposite of that. Hannah is a regular person. She's not handing down enlightenment like some new-age guru. She's talking about practical, day-to-day strategies that will help you take better care of yourself, that will help you avoid unsustainable short-term comforts in favor of developing genuine self-care habits.

Hannah, while drawing from her own experiences, suggests steps you can take to identify your coping strategies and replace them with actions that truly satisfy your needs. And she does it without self-righteousness, without sounding like a guru, and without pushing esoteric spiritual gibberish.

Want better relationships? Want to feel happier and more self-confident? Want to stop cycles of procrastination? How about less self-destructive activities? This book will help you do it, step by step, with tons of practical examples and suggestions.

This little book has saved me a ton of time and will probably help me add years to my life. It's like she went through the self help section and said, "here, just read this". I went from fairly ignorant of the self-care process to confident in the fundamentals of self care in a matter of hours.

In the past, in regards to self care, I've made comments like, "yeah great, I cant' nap at 10AM, or live off juice, or afford the spa, I work". This book directly addresses this outlook, and others, while providing such clear guidelines that I was able to implement a small but useful change the same day I read it. No chanting in this book? You mean I could just take 5 and acknowledge something I appreciate? Well, I guess I could. Sounds...practical.

As I read the book It seemed like someone put a bunch of useful stuff all in one place. I enjoyed the fact that the author seems like someone anyone would know. That honest person who says, "yeah, I struggled, failed, and here's how I dealt with it". Nothing over the top just real. This book doesn't teach that self care is easy, it reassures that it is possible, for everyone.

Thanks again to the author, although some part of me still wants to indulge a guru. Maybe spend more time with people in robes? Peace.

Meet your needs as you move from coping to thriving

I thoroughly enjoyed this thoughtful book.

We are conditioned to sacrifice our needs to others but how can we help if we are not taking care of ourselves? We have internalized our parents and much of our behavior results from their voices. Parts of us split off and stay in a childlike state. But we need to make our own reality and meet our own needs and that is where self care comes in. We need to escape our conditioning, feel our emotions and negotiate.

Self care is our choice. It starts with accepting yourself. Focus on the actions and then empathize. "Guilt = I did something bad. Shame = I am bad." And watch the people around you. Are they meeting your needs? Find your True Believers. Those who recognize your potential. Are you meeting your needs? This comes first. HALT are you hungry, angry, lonely or tired? Take care of yourself first. What can you do to relax and have fun? There are many suggestions in the book. I encourage you to read this and incorporate it into your life. There are many resources referenced in the book as well. Meditate, yoga, journal, sleep, and schedule to meet your needs as you move from coping to thriving.

Not the best handbook in the field

At the University of Padua (Italy, Venice area) my training on the mechanics of vibrations was founded about Rao handbook.
A real great book (I believe that buy its fifth edition).
Unfortunately this work of Prof. Rao, on reliability engineering, is not, in my opinion, to the same level.
And I say this with sorrow.
In particular, Chapter 15, on the maintainability and availability, I think it can be improved.
There are, on the editorial market, better options.

Belongs on Every Shelf

This book is another outstanding contribution by Susan Wise Bauer. It walks you through the development of scientific thought and discovery through the ages, with pointers to where to find accessible copies of the primary source documents, and tips on what to get from reading them-- including a website with links to free copies and excerpts of the primary sources where available. This book belongs on the shelf for any individual who would like a better grounding in where our major western scientific ideas come from, how they impacted other scientists, and how scientists build upon the work of others, whether that means confirming a theory or moving ideas in a new direction. Homeschoolers with high school students will also love this book, no matter what style of homeschooling is practiced; it is not a book only for classical homeschoolers. I already have plans for a high school level philosophy of science course, and my 14 year old has been sneaking the book off to read parts of it. He knows our course from it will be a couple of years away yet, but it was just too enticing.

Excellent starting point for exploring great science writing of the past.

This book is not so much about the history of science, it is about the great writings of science, looking at the key writings since the time of Aristotle. Author Susan Wise Bauer encourages the reader to explore the original works and specifies where the reader can find them. This is excellent as the advice is very specific and not something general such as “look online.” I found the discussion fascinating and it has tempted me to find these old works. Ultimately, this book is about the history of science and it is excellent. And unlike a lot of history of science books, it covers biology as well. I strongly recommend this book for anyone interested in exploring these old writings but don’t know where to start. Bauer writes in a conversational manner and the science is easy to understand so I can recommend this book for anyone interested in the history of science.

From cell to star

Everything has a history. Science and scientists are no exception. Bauer tells the most well-known stories in science and the most famous scientists and thinkers from contributions by people close to the scientists. Thu,s Galileo refuted Aristotle's view that heavy objects can only fall to the ground at the same time as lighter ones only if they fell from a greater height. Galileo's discoveries and thoughts also had an immense impact on Newton; and Newton himself, excelled after his feud with Robert Hooke and the Royal Society over his discovery that colours are merely refracted light - Hooke claimed that Newton had stolen his ideas. Similarly, the discovery of the structure of the DNA by Francis Crick and James Watson (and Rosalind Franklin) might not have taken place if Crick had not been goaded by Watson to ignore English conventions and stayed away from this field of study because another Englishman (Maurice Wilkins) had already started on it.

Bauer's account of the race between Charles Darwin and Alfred Wallace to the publication of their theories of evolution is, in comparison to the full stories of both men in their many biographies, a short but exciting story that is one of the most pulsating races of all time. And can a book of this nature overlook the 'Big Bang'? Certainly not. The story of the universe is told from the lenses of Edwin Hubble who began with the speculation that when we look into the cosmos we might be seeing not just stars but 'clusters of galaxies'.

History and the universe is a complex web. We may not yet have the ultimate answer - if there is one - but Bauer has given us a rich little book to take with us on our contemplative journey.

Must have, but order a back up marker now

This is a MUST HAVE for simulating test day. I do drill sets with it and many, many practice questions. The BIG NEGATIVE (hence three stars) is it only comes with one marker. If you use the scratch pad a lot, which you will because you are studying a lot, then the marker will run out fairly quickly. Go ahead and order another pen for yourself when you buy the scratch pad (amazon sells them-it is called a Staedtler non-permanent Lumocolor). Regular dry-erase pens are a real B to wipe off the scratch pad laminate. If you are in a pinch for a replacement like I was, use a pen made for overhead transparencies like a teacher uses. I found the Expo Vis-a-Vis brand worked well. MUCH easier to wipe off the laminate than a normal dry erase pen.

A Must-Have for the GMAT

I'm a cheap person. I generally don't like spending money unless absolutely necessary. When I first saw this, I thought it would be stupid to spend ~$15 on a simple pad and marker. After reading other's reviews, I decided to purchase this product, and I'm extremely glad that I did.

The pad is almost identical to the pad you will receive at the GMAT testing center, and the wet-erase marker is the exact same. Using this pad and marker is quite different from using traditional pen and paper. It's a relatively inexpensive way to eliminate another variable on test day. After using this pad and marker during GMAT practice, there aren't going to be an pad/marker-related surprises on test day. There is no doubt: this product (along with my Manhattan GMAT books and OG12) helped me get a 770 on the GMAT.

My only criticism: It would be nice if they would include a second marker with the pad. My marker ran out of ink after a couple months of doing all my GMAT work / practice using the pad and marker. These markers can be a little hard to come by. After mine ran out, I was unable to find the same marker at any of the art / office supply stores in my city, so I had to order a 4-pack of the markers from an online art-supply site. The 4-pack cost close to $10 after shipping.

Just what you will need for practice testing.

Purchased this for a co-worker of mine that is ready to take the Gmat test, and it worked out very well. Laminated so you can erase the pen if needed, and can be reused. Came with a pen, but would be a better value if it came with two. All in all, does what you need it to do.

The kinetic energy of the aptly named Locomotion (the nickname of Lonnie Collins Motion) permeates the 60 poems that tell his sad yet hopeful story. Lonnie's first poem sets up a conflict familiar to anyone who has attempted creativity: despite the cheering of his teacher, Ms. Marcus ("Write it down before it leaves your brain," she says), as he begins to write, Lonnie hears the critical voice of his foster mother ("It's Miss Edna's over and over/ Be quiet!"). As Lonnie explores poetry's various forms throughout this brief yet poignant and occasionally humorous volume, he also reveals Miss Edna's kindness toward him in the little things she says and does ("The last time Miss Edna came home and found me/ crying She said Think/ about all the stuff you love, Lonnie"). Gradually Lonnie reveals that at age seven, his parents died in a fire, leaving him and his younger sister, Lili, orphaned. Lili was adopted, yet Lonnie figures out a way to visit her regularly. The gradual unfolding of his life's events intermingle with his discoveries about poetry as a form, from haiku to sonnets ("Ms. Marcus says "sonnet" comes from "sonnetto"/ and that sonnetto means little song or sound/ It reminds me of that guy's name Gepetto/ the one who made Pinocchio from wood he found") to the epistle poems he writes to his father and to God. Woodson, through Lonnie, creates (much as Sharon Creech did with the boy narrator in Love That Dog) a contagious appreciation for poetry while using the genre as a cathartic means for expressing the young poet's own grief. Grade 4-6-Lonnie Collins Motion, the Locomotion of the title, is a New York City fifth grader with a gifted teacher who assigns her class to write different forms of poetry. The house fire that killed Lonnie's parents and the four years of trauma and slow healing that follow are gradually revealed through his writings. In a masterful use of voice, Woodson allows Lonnie's poems to tell a complex story of loss and grief and to create a gritty, urban environment. Despite the spare text, Lonnie's foster mother and the other minor characters are three-dimensional, making the boy's world a convincingly real one. His reflections touch on poverty and on being African American when whites seem to have the material advantages, and return repeatedly to the pain of living apart from his younger sister. Readers, though, will recognize Lonnie as a survivor. As she did in Miracle Boys (Putnam, 2000), the author places the characters in nearly unbearable circumstances, then lets incredible human resiliency shine through. Gr. 3-6. Lonnie is grieving and angry about the loss of his parents in a fire four years ago and about his subsequent separation from his beloved little sister, who is in foster care. He expresses his feelings in his fifth-grade poetry-writing class, encouraged by his wonderful teacher Ms. Marcus. In a series of free-verse poems and more formal verse, such as haiku and sonnets, he writes about his life and about the writing that "makes me remember." The framework of the story is fairy-tale idyllic--perfect family before the fire; happy-ever-after foster family by the end of the book--but the poetry is simple and immediate, true to the voice of the lost kid who finds himself with caring people and with words. The line breaks make for very easy reading, and Lonnie talks about those line breaks and about poetry forms, making this ideal for use in classrooms where students are reading and writing poetry. From rap to haiku, Woodson shows and tells that poetry is about who we are. Hazel Rochman

LOCOMOTION by Jacqueline Woodson tops the list of originality with thought provoking words from a little boy named Lonnie. Although LOCOMOTION is categorized as poetry, it is not written as one of the traditional styles of poems that rhyme. LOCOMOTION is a collection of poems that reads as a story with uniqueness and wonderful grandeur. Every word echoes a young child's hurt and rediscovery of self.

Lonnie, who lost his parents in a fire, writes in first person in the book. He tells a story through poetic form of suddenly being left alone and separated from his little sister, Lili. Lonnie is encouraged by his teacher to write down all this thoughts as soon as they hit his brain. He writes about living in a foster home, visits with his sister and going to school each day. Lonnie continues his thoughts about the new kid in school, his friends and learning about sickle cell anemia for the first time. He writes of trying to believe in God, as his little sister has done, believing one day they will be together as a family. The most heart wrenching part was his words of about not having his parents with them anymore and learning that he and his sister would be living in separate homes.

I have never read such an enjoyable children's book as LOCOMOTION. Jacqueline Woodson has opened new doors of poetic style and humble offerings. Although this book is written for ages six to twelve, a book of this magnitude can be enjoyed by all ages. Several selections brought tears to my eyes and caused my heart and soul to interact with each word. The heartfelt meaning of why Lonnie was expressing himself through words was moving. Jacqueline Woodson has indeed written another award winning children's book.

I love this book because he expereses his feelings in poems.I would recamend this book to people who like poems or are afraid to express their feelings. In stead of saying it like it's bad, but express in things that you like doing. Read this book and you'll fall in love. I wish there was a locomotion 2.

Locomotion, An Okay Book

This book, Locomotion, was an okay book. I think that in some ways it was good and in some ways bad. The book should have been called a collection of poems rather than a book. The poems did not fit like a story well because they never reached a climax. I think that this book would suit someone who wanted to learn that poetry does not need to rhyme and that they can be very freeform. Woodson has a gift for writing poetry, but not for creating a plot. I would not recommend this book to someone looking for a great book, but for a quick read. I thought that the book did not satisfy me but still deserves a decent rating. It was interesting to discuss at times but sometimes the poems lacked deeper meaning. All in all, the book was good but not a book that I would highly recommend.

What I like about it is that it pulls me

If you see 3d total publishing on the book--just get it already. I have a BUNCH of their books and not one is a stinker. This book is no exception. What I like about it is that it pulls me, as an artist, back to the very basics--if you are a beginner, you need this book--its sorts out a LOT of stuff for you and won't rattle your brain and the projects are really neat. If you are medium or advanced--it won't kill you to get this and have it on hand as a handy reference---if you are as advanced as you think you are, then you know that you don't know everything --3dtotal takes the rough edges off that problem. Get this book. I did.--cat
