This Family of Mine CHAPTER ONE “Papa Was a Rolling Stone”
Winter 1952

The door blew open with driving force; shards of wood like shrapnel sprayed the cold, cramped Brooklyn railroad flat. To a twelve-year-old, the U.S. Marshal’s arrival came in the form of an unfathomable explosion that would haunt his dreams into adulthood. Two local police officers and one marshal from the housing department had been dispatched to evict a poor and hungry family of thirteen—despite the fact that Christmas was less than one week away.

My father lay huddled with his six brothers, all forced to survive in one room, on two mattresses, in the musty three-room apartment. It was in the dead of winter and none of the Gotti children—seven boys and four girls, ages five to sixteen—had clothing suitable for protection against the elements. Dad would later recall that evening as being not only unbearably cold but accompanied by a dark, empty sky.

The Gotti children were accustomed to sharing tight quarters. If it seemed unnatural, even cruel, it was nonetheless preferable to sleeping on a cold bare floor “or being homeless,” as my father used to say. The family bounced around in those years, from a poverty-stricken section of the South Bronx to a modest apartment in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn. My grandfather, John Senior, made some money in an all-night card game and moved the family into a middle-class neighborhood; however, it wasn’t long before his luck (and money) ran out. Within a few months the Gotti clan ended up in more humble surroundings, a shabby apartment in Downtown Brooklyn. “Times were hard,” my father said. “And they were about to get a lot harder.”

The eviction in 1952 was swift and heartless. Dressed only in worn flimsy garments, the Gotti children and their mother, Fannie, stood shivering in front of the dilapidated apartment complex that only a few minutes earlier had been their home. John Senior was out that night, off on one of his business trips. Monthly rent on the apartment was a paltry sum, but even that proved more than my grandfather could manage.

Philomena “Fannie” DeCarlo Gotti was a hardworking housewife who often took on odd jobs outside the home—doing the neighbors’ laundry, cleaning apartments, bagging groceries at a local market to help make ends meet. But lately there never seemed to be enough money. The family was barely able to keep food on the table and heat in the apartment. Conversely, my grandfather, John Joseph Gotti, was a perpetual adolescent, forever in search of excitement and fun. An avid gambler, drinker, and womanizer, he rarely held a steady job; whenever he got the “itch,” as Grandma called it, he would take off for parts unknown, typically accompanied by some barmaid he’d only recently met.

There were times when Grandpa hit the road on one of his so-called “business trips” and didn’t return for months. For a while he had a job as a camera grip for a major film studio and even traveled to Hollywood on one occasion. This failed to result in any sort of legitimate career, but it did produce a handful of entertaining tales. My grandfather was fond of embellishment, and so he would tell anyone within earshot of his work-related war stories, like the time he met Jane Russell.

During the filming of Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, Grandpa swore the gorgeous actress was attracted to him (forget for a moment the professional chasm that separated the lowly tech and the leading lady), and that she looked for excuses to talk to him. According to his story, she even winked at him on occasion.

Then there was the time he met Tony Curtis at the studio commissary. Grandpa insisted the two had become fast friends.

“That guy is a class act,” Grandpa had often said. Then he would smile and laugh. “Very personable, too.”

So instantaneous was their bond that Grandpa and Tony Curtis went out together that very night and took the town by storm. They drank themselves blind, eventually winding up in a seedy motel with a “couple of real lookers.” Or so Grandpa claimed, anyway.

The odd brush with greatness apparently was far more important to my grandfather than the mundane responsibilities of family life. It seemed not to matter that he had a large family to feed, or that there was never enough money to pay the rent or heating bill. And every so often, the Gotti family was kicked to the curb.

This naturally produced a degree of cynicism in my father, who years later would erupt any time he read a cliché-ridden newspaper article or book that described Grandpa as a hardworking Italian immigrant.

“These fuckin’ bums that write books—they’re worse than us,” he would rail. “Lies. All lies! My father was born in New Jersey. He’s never been to Italy in his whole fuckin’ life. He never worked a day in his life. He was a rolling stone. He never provided for his family. He never did nothin’. He never earned nothin’. And we never had nothin’.”

DAD RECALLED HIS mother’s reaction while standing at the curb on the night of the eviction, in the freezing cold, wearing a tattered sweater over a worn and faded house-dress. She was only in her mid-thirties, but looked closer to fifty. The years, overloading her with work and anxiety and neglect, had not been kind to her. Grandma was a “cold woman,” Dad often said, hardened by years of sacrifice and disappointment. Mostly, Dad blamed his father for this. A man was supposed to take care of his family: put a roof over their heads, food in their bellies, and keep them warm in proper winter clothing. But, rather than struggle to fulfill his responsibilities and obligations, Grandpa chose instead to run—usually to the nearest bar to drown himself in his failure as a husband and father.

On this evening my father saw that she was understandably upset. Although Grandma rarely showed weakness in front of her children, the tears streamed down her cheeks. She stared at the old apartment building, then out at the street, and then back to the apartment building. Her eyes, my father noticed, were empty and sad, and the expression on her face frightened him.

The Gotti clan stood shivering outside for nearly an hour that night, a mid-winter drizzle chilling them to the bone. “An hour,” Dad said. “But it felt like an eternity.”

Exhausted and fearing for the welfare of her children, Grandma finally took action, marching the entire, rain-soaked clan nearly a mile through the streets of Brooklyn to the House of the Good Shepherd, a church-sponsored residence for “wayward girls” (the facility catered to young, single women who had unplanned pregnancies). It must have been painful for Grandma to beg—she was a proud woman, after all—but that is what she did. For the sake of her children, she asked for mercy, and Sister Mary Margaret, dressed head-to-toe in black, responded with kindness, showing Grandma and the Gotti children to the building’s attic.

In reality, it wasn’t really an attic at all; it was a four-room apartment, a conversion made in the early 1940s to accommodate housing needs for the staff. Although the apartment had only an efficiency kitchenette, it was better than nothing, and Grandma saw its potential. The living room was really more of an alcove, adjacent to the kitchenette; it would likely serve as a fourth bedroom for the oldest male children. The two other rooms would be shared by Grandma and the remaining children, including my father, at least until Grandpa could find his way to the family’s new home. No one knew when that would be, but at that point, one of the three bedrooms would then be used as a master, resulting in eleven children sharing two small rooms. Tight quarters, to be sure, but, as Dad explained, “It was definitely better than the alternative.”

The days that followed would prove nearly as bleak. At the age of twelve, Dad was forced to hit the streets and find work, as were the other Gotti children. Everyone was expected to pull their own weight, especially the boys.

Dad combed the neighborhood looking for employment. Options, he quickly learned, were limited. A corner service station on Fulton Street had recently dismissed two mechanics in an effort to cut costs. A local deli already had two full-time day workers and three part-time night staffers. The manager at the A&P supermarket offered little encouragement, telling Dad he was too young for anything but carrying bags for customers. My father gave that one a moment’s consideration before spotting a crowd of eager boys fighting over customers in the parking lot. Realizing that his pay would consist only of tips, and that the store already seemed overstaffed, he walked away.

Not enough customers, not enough hours, not enough money.

SIX WEEKS LATER, my grandfather ambled down the street to the House of the Good Shepherd, having easily tracked the family down through a network of friends and acquaintances. Along the way, he’d been told of the eviction and the dire circumstances faced by those whom he had abandoned. If his father felt guilt or remorse, Dad said, it wasn’t readily apparent. Accountability was not high on Grandpa’s list of virtues. He preferred to play the victim, forever damning the world and cursing God for having dealt him a raw hand. And so he rationalized his behavior and his vices—the alcohol, gambling, loose women, and the nasty temper as well.

Grandpa turned up at the attic apartment late one night, itching for an argument with my grandmother. At first he rang the bell and waited patiently, but there was no answer. After three tries, he began pounding the door like an impulsive child—pounding and kicking with such force that Sister Mary Margaret nearly called the police. Realizing who the belligerent man was, she told him, “Please, sir. Use the top bell.”

MEANWHILE, OBLIVIOUS TO the commotion three stories below, my grandmother and her brood slept peacefully. Of all the Gotti children, only two were awake. Dad was restless and couldn’t sleep, and one of his younger brothers, I believe Ritchie, was wide awake because he had to go to the bathroom. Since there were seven boys in a single room, and only two beds for them to share, the Gotti sons took turns. One night someone was lucky to get a semi-comfortable cot, and the next one was handed an old army blanket and relegated to sleeping on the floor. That particular night, my father was lucky to have been assigned a cot.

Or so he thought.

Since the attic apartment was a considerable distance from the main plumbing, a bathroom had never been installed. What had begun as a generous offer of temporary shelter for my grandmother and her children had evolved into a more permanent arrangement. In exchange for room and board, my grandmother was expected to clean and maintain the House of the Good Shepherd. This meant washing and waxing the massive wood floors every night, as well as cleaning the mess hall after dinner. And there were additional duties: monthly window cleaning, repairing and sewing (such as pillows, blankets, and quilts), and any other household repairs that had been neglected. Given that my grandmother already had a full-time job at a local butcher shop, this wasn’t the most ideal arrangement, and it surely took its toll on her health and temperament. But it was the best that Grandma could manage at the time; until she had saved enough money to rent another apartment, or until her husband returned (hopefully with a few dollars in his pocket), it would have to do.

The bathroom was actually one floor below the attic apartment, and since heat was scarce throughout the old building, the hallway was usually frigid. Not surprisingly, the Gotti children dreaded those nights when they had to navigate a cold and unwieldy trip to the bathroom. Dad would slide out from under his blanket and weave his way through a minefield of sleeping bodies, all the while shivering uncontrollably. If he was unlucky enough to step on someone’s hand or foot, the ensuing yelping and fighting would provoke an angry appearance from my grandmother—something none of the kids wanted.

While Dad continued to toss and turn, his brother Ritchie fought the urge to pee as long as he could—and when the pressure turned to pain, he jumped from the bed and stumbled toward the door. As luck would have it, the door wouldn’t open. Uncle Ritchie desperately jiggled the handle from side to side, pushing in the door, ever so slightly, and then pulling back.

Push . . . pull. Push . . . pull.

Still nothing.

With Ritchie’s bladder on the verge of giving out, he frantically sought another option. He looked around the room for a container, anything he could use to relieve himself. But a quick scan turned up nothing. He was ready to explode. Dad watched his brother make a mad dash for the bedroom window rather than soil himself or his cot. He ripped it open, and peed into the cold night air. How could he possibly know Grandpa was standing beneath the window?

My grandfather was a terror; his ill temper had the shortest of fuses. Beatings were the norm; even at twelve, Dad couldn’t escape them. Sometimes the violence was so severe that my father would miss school for days; the blackened eyes, swollen lips, and bruises too painful and shameful to be shown in public. The poverty and abuse, both mental and physical, that my father experienced as a child helped shape his outlook as much as anything else.

When my grandfather finally made it inside and upstairs to the attic apartment, he headed for the back bedroom—straight for the person responsible for his unexpected shower. Of course, my father was scared speechless. He hopped back into bed and pulled the old army blanket up over his head, trying hard to stop trembling. My grandfather pushed in the old wooden door and stormed into the room, stepping over bodies, poking each kid with the tip of an umbrella. The first to jump, he figured, was the one already awake, and thus the most likely culprit. But Uncle Ritchie lay still as a rock—while Dad, still unable to sleep, tossed and turned. He jumped when Grandpa poked him. So naturally, he got the blame.

The beating Dad endured that night was worse than any he’d ever received before. His face was so badly bruised that my grandmother pulled him out of school for several days. As a boy, Dad and his siblings did their best to avoid pissing off their father; what none of them had counted on was the possibility of pissing on their father.

THE FOLLOWING WEEK, my father managed to get a job delivering laundry. He worked after school and all day Saturday for fifty cents an hour, plus tips. He used an old pushcart with rusty wheels to haul the large packages around Downtown Brooklyn, about a mile or so from the Gotti household. At the end of the week he handed his pay over to my grandmother, keeping only $1.50 for himself. The fact that Dad was forced to turn over most of his wages didn’t bother him in the least; mature beyond his years, he felt proud of being able to help support his family.

Unfortunately, his happiness was short-lived. Three months later, in the spring of 1952, my grandfather got restless and left home again. This time my grandmother fell apart. To my father’s eyes, the change was remarkable. Fannie became depressed and withdrawn. Nothing seemed to matter anymore.

The days that followed were dark times for the entire family. And for a twelve-year-old, Dad shouldered an unusually heavy burden. It wasn’t just the beatings that had stripped him of his innocence; it was the constant verbal abuse dished out by my grandfather. As my father once said to me, “How many times can a kid hear that he’s a piece of shit before he begins to believe it? How many times can a kid hear that he’ll never amount to nothing, because he is nothing?”

According to Dad, there were two strict rules necessary for survival in the Gotti household (at least whenever my grandfather was in residence): “Keep your mouth shut—and run like hell.” Usually he received advance warning before an actual event took place. Simply listening to my grandfather’s rants provided insight as to what was likely to happen next. Still, there was no way to know for certain when the proverbial shit would hit the fan.

Perhaps the most cataclysmic event took place in the middle of the night in mid-February 1952. Sister Mary Margaret roused the Gotti children from a comfortable sleep and gathered the family in a downstairs parlor. Dad knew that something was terribly wrong. Where was their mother? Even Sister Mary Margaret’s offer of hot chocolate and cookies couldn’t mask the dread and fear that hung in the air.

The children, who lived in a state of perpetual hunger, ate voraciously, anyway. When they were finished, Sister Mary Margaret calmly issued the bad news. Their mother had fallen “ill,” euphemistically referred to back then as “exhaustion.” Today, of course, the condition is more commonly referred to as depression. In its most severe form, it results in a complete emotional collapse. The years of trauma had finally exacted their toll, all the bickering and fighting, the sickness that permeated every aspect of her marriage to my grandfather. It had become too much for Fannie to bear, and when my grandfather took off the last time, she withdrew into herself, to the only place, perhaps, where she felt safe.

Grandma, Sister Mary Margaret explained to Dad and his brothers and sisters, had been admitted to a local hospital and placed in the “hardship ward.” Because there were no relatives willing to accept financial and custodial responsibility, the Gotti family was effectively splintered. The children were separated and sent to various places, some more toxic than others. Most of the kids went to live with old neighbors who had become friends; a few weren’t as fortunate. My father and his older brother, Pete, for example, drew the shortest straws and were dropped off at the Brooklyn Home for Boys, not knowing when—or if—their mother would ever come back for them.

A Sugar-Coated Look Inside the House of John Gotti
By jg
I'm not going to lie: I watched (and loved) Growing Up Gotti... But push the Gotti Boys aside and enter the world of Gotti long before an A&E debut.

Wonder what life was really like growing up with John Gotti as your father? Well... Victoria Gotti will offer you a fairly sugary version of the man the world now refers to as one of the most infamous mobsters of all time. While I tend to think that Victoria does put herself (and her family life) out there, there's no masking her loyalty and sentimentality towards her family.

Is this a bad thing? Well, it depends on why you're reading. If you're hoping for a daughter to sell out her father and dish out the very dirty details, you won't find it here. If you want a glimpse in to Victoria's world, even if one does get the idea some of it is seen through rose coloured glasses, you'll enjoy this book. While I believe Victoria's emotions are real, the simple fact is that there are many incidents which may be glossed over leaving the reader to believe the truth is probably somewhere in the middle of this version and that of the media. All in all, a good beach read for me.

I had seen Victoria Gotti on The Housewives of New ...
By Jan Genovese
I had seen Victoria Gotti on The Housewives of New Jersey and was curious to know more about her so I read this life story. Whoa! She comes off as very tough and street-smart, almost hardened by life, and now I know why. Her life was crazy! Along with bearing the emotional burden of having a father in "the life" (who was in and out of jail through her upbringing) she had the physical curse of a body that suffered pure mayhem! To say this family existed on sheer drama is an understatement. It seems every time her phone rang, Victoria was facing yet another family crisis. Her mother's emotional burdens were not to be believed. And her father! How could she reconcile his ferocious, electrifying personality, full of compassion for others, with his heinous acts? There is one word for Victoria Gotti: survivor.

Very interesting and entertaining
By Patricia Kershman
Good book. A history of the mob families in New York. John Gotti Sr. was a smart criminal, born aggressive leader, had a tough, abusive childhood, you almost feel sorry for him when you read about the extreme child abuse and poverty he endured as a child. However, a lot of us had a poor childhood, and we finished school, some went on to college, and became successful adults without committing crimes and going to jail. I wish for his kids and wife he would have put that energy and smarts in building a successful legal business for his family. Victoria has 9 lives, suffered years of illness and surgeries. With her health history, she survived and lived the good life and supported her kids in a nice lifestyle. Where most women just give up, she kept going and going. She's got guts! I hope she has a lot of success with the book because of her hard work and struggles in life. Good luck Victoria and write another about your mom. She deserves an award for being married to John Gotti Sr. I would like to hear her story before she gets too old and forgets.

Bioestadstica amigable + StudentConsult en espaol (Spanish Edition), by Miguel Angel Martinez-Gonzalez, Almudena Sanchez-V

Massive, Complete & Utterly Amazing...But do you already own SF20?
By slateman
This is mainly a comparison review, noting the changes from SF20 to this release, SF25. Skip down a few paragraphs for that.

SF25 is a behemoth 446-page, nearly four-and-a-half pound book. It is a remarkable collection of art spanning dozens of games and is the best SF book in my decent collection of over a dozen such titles. It features art from a plethora of excellent artists, presented in solid binding and printed on high-quality paper. While I’ve seen better bindings, my copy of SF20 has lasted five years with no trouble (same quality) and the paper is wonderful.

It is, without a doubt, a must-have for anyone interested in SF art and has been offered at a tremendously-reasonable price. I used to pay twice as much for half when I was importing Capcom books from Japan.

This is a five-star purchase and the only reason to doubt would be if you already own SF20. If you don’t, buy this book. If you do, however, let’s compare…

The page count has risen almost 130 pages (from 320 to 448). While that is a hefty tally, realize that still means 320 pages are identical or almost identical. What is added is almost entirely newer games.

Among these added pages you’ll find 18 pages of interviews, 8 new illustrator sections, and 28 new pages of Polygon Pictures art. The latter has all the newest Super Street Fighter IV (and SSFIV: Arcade Edition) art and a ton of Street Fighter x Tekken art. You will not find the newest Ultra Street Fighter IV art here.

The intro has fourteen pages of exclusive art (7 two-page spreads featuring new works by the likes of Kinu Nishimura, Bengus & Shinkiro, etc. all fantastic). Also littered throughout are recent calendar artwork and a few bits & pieces missed from SF20.

If you own SF20, this isn’t necessarily a must-buy. It’s excellent and wonderful but you have to gauge if 130 pages is worth the cash. If you already have SFxT Artworks, you likely have a lot (but not all, I don’t think) of that art. If you own the SFIV + SSFIV Official Complete Works, that book has most of this, but not the AE characters (Yun, Yang, Evil Ryu & Oni) and some of the art specific to the AE upgrade.

If you have both SF20 and SFxT Artworks, you might want to pass.

If you just have SF20, weigh the price tag with the additions. I had no trouble plunking down the cash; the book is spectacular. But almost 2/3rds of this is the same as the last release. What is new though is certainly high-quality and the cover/back and spine are all wonderful. It sits on my shelf, massive but perfectly placed. This book is amazing.

Fantastic Artbook! 400+ Pages of Stunning Artwork.
By David
Terrific book that's 400+ pages of stunning artwork to celebrate 25 years of Street Fighter. The book is broken up in to sections for each artist with their comments, and where each artist has also provided an original piece of art for the book's opening, and covers every Street Fighter game from Street Fighter 2 to Street Fighter IV and the various crossover and VS titles.

Bonus points for the hilarious and absurd cutaway diagram for Shadowloo's island hideout!!

The book is highly recommended for all Street Fighter fans and those who love great artwork and video game art books!

THIS BOOK HAS WON A FINALIST AWARD IN THE NEXT GENERATION INDIE BOOK AWARDS.

The door lay in shattered pieces scattered across the floor as my father flipped back his vest to reveal the gun he always carried. "I'm tiredof you being so mouthy. You better learn to watch your tone with me."

I stuck my face right in his, leaned in, and yelled at fullvolume. "Pull the gun!" There came a point when living no longermattered. It didn't matter if you lived or died, as long as the tormentended.

I never knew if it was Dad's joy of intimidation, his apparentneed to push the boundaries of society as far as possible, or his mental illness that brought him to that point in the spring of '91.

But I knew what had brought me there. It all started on June 1 of 1979, when my mother drove me down to a neighbor's of ours in ruralDayton, Maine to see a new-born foal and my life changed forever. At the ripe age of nine, I met and fell in love with the horse who wouldbecome my best-friend, alter-ego, and confidant for the next twenty-five years.

A gripping coming-of-age memoir about finding yourself,over-coming abuse, learning how to value and protect yourself and thoseyou love, but most of all about the power of love and how it can changeyour destiny.

About the Author
I'm a Mainer born and bred, so if you ever have the occasion to meet me don't be surprised by the heavy Northern accent. I've never been in a city bigger than Portland, Maine and I have no wish to. I'm a country person down past the bone into the very marrow of me. But even in the country, I don't fit the "normal" mold. I've never hunted animals with anything other than my camera, nor have I raised my own meat or planted a garden. My seven acres of our great country has been given back to nature's hand with not even a lawnmower touching it in the last nine years. The wild grasses, blackberry, and raspberry patches have taken over and I watch the native animals enjoying them on a regular basis. I write poetry, short stories for both children and adults, and science fiction for fun. But I've only ever written one book that could make the world a better place by allowing people to see how special and loyal horses are when they are raised with love. "Come Running When I Call" is my tribute to the most special horse in the world, Trixie, the silly filly and beautiful girl who changed my destiny for the better.

is a beautifully interwoven story of a girl and the filly
By Susan Deer Cloud
Kimberly McLaughlin's memoir, Come Running When I Call, is a beautifully interwoven story of a girl and the filly, Trixie, that she buys, cares for and loves. I am looking for the words to best say this, and I know anyone who has ever been as close to another animal as Kimberly was to her Trixie will understand ... the girl and horse in this story teach each other about love as deep as it gets and as it turns out they essentially mother and raise each other. This is a powerful tale about a precocious Maine girl whose father is bi-polar and who in many ways is living in a house of horrors, never knowing what her father is going to do that is terrifying to her and the rest of her family. It brings together main characters and other characters in profound ways and then weds them to land and "spirit of place." The longer I read in the book the more I felt immersed in the story, crying and laughing and dreaming along with the author. I really admire the unique and original qualities of Come Running When I Call ... the Maine setting, the particular kind of humor, the connection to earth and horse, the exploration of bond between author and horse and the mutual strengthening that arises from such connection. A very powerful coming of age memoir and testament to human dignity and freedom that will make your very body shake. I wish there were more books like this one and hope that one day someone will be wise enough to make it into a film.

Truly touching story of a girl and her horse.
By Sarah H
I could not put this book down. It is a story about a young girl who has a rough family life that bonds with a newborn filly. She is totally dedicated to this horse until the filly takes her last breath. This is an amazing and very touching account of the bond between a human and a horse. I was totally caught up in the sacrifices the young girl was willing to make for her best friend Trixie. I laughed and cried reading this book and came a way with a sense of being privileged to read this touching and haunting story. I loved this book! Would highly recommend it to anyone who has truly loved a horse.

A powerful example
By ChillOnLake
As an animal lover having just finished the story of Kim and Trixie's rare and beautiful bond, I am quite moved, filled with admiration for the amazing animal and the character of the strong girl-turned-woman. This perfectly titled novel not only shares the thrill a girl experiences when a horse comes running to you because of the special connection built through patience and love, but illustrates the nitty gritty reality of being responsible for a horse, from training and building trust, boarding and vet bills to the dynamics of a herd and other horse owners. And most importantly, the memoir follows a family challenged by mental illness and resulting abuse...and how having a horse helped save the girl's spirit. A powerful example of the therapeutic value of pets.

From Kirkus Reviews
A romp through the tumultuous life of Wu Jao, China's only empress. In her first novel, McCune tells an intricate story of lust and rebellion spanning two generations in seventh-century China. At 13, Wu Jao, the second daughter of a minor nobleman's wife, is summoned to serve as a concubine to the Emperor Taitsung. She is placed in a section of the emperor's harem that is scandalized by internal conflict and mysterious deaths. Still, as she has been instructed by her family, Jao remains obedient and keeps her suspicions to herself. She does befriend the caretaker of the emperor's children, thus getting to know the royal heirs. But when Jao deduces the identity of a murderer within her harem and realizes that she is to be the next victim, she goes directly to the emperor--a highly risky and unheard of act. Her frank and gutsy attitude, however, wins the affection of the emperor. The two develop a closeness that becomes the envy of the higher-ranking concubines. When the emperor dies, his concubines are permanently moved to a convent. But the new emperor, Kaotsung, remembers Jao fondly from his childhood and sends orders for her to return to the palace. This unusual act disturbs his jealous wife, who is eventually dethroned, allowing Jao to rise to an even higher status. As the story proceeds, Jao uses her insight and savvy (both personal and political) to become the closest confidante of the emperor, after whose death, when none of her children can govern as well as she, Jao assumes the throne. McCune's expertise in Asian studies is apparent, but the story drags at the end. Filled with the trials and tribulations of palace life, this book often reads more like a creatively written history book than a novel. We meet many characters, but few other than Jao display any depth. -- Copyright 1994, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

Please don't judge the book by its cover.
By belle
While the cover may be a thousand years off, we would do well to attribute this mistake to the publisher not the author. As a scholar currently researching the Empress Wu Zetian I can tell you that coming up with historical information on her can be tricky and difficult. Yet, Evelyn McCune does a masterful job of filling in the historical outlines of Wu's life into a believable and somewhat plausible (although a bit romantic) account. If the job of historical fiction is to make historical sympathetic, then McCune certainly achieves this end- a laudable feat given that the historical figure in question was one of the most violent and ruthless despots in Chinese history. McCune not only humanizes Wu Zetian, but justifies many of her actions (even if some of the less noble moments are glossed over.) The book should not to be taken as the gospel truth, but it is a very enjoyable novel. Then again, that's why they call it historical *fiction* isn't it?

Wonderful topic, atrocious writing
By Jenny Zhang
I discovered this book while browsing amazon on my kindle. I am an avid reader of historical fiction, and recently, I've been enamored with books about the ancient East. When I discovered this book, I went ahead and bought it for my kindle despite the 3 star rating. I had assumed that the criticism was from the kitschy and inaccurate cover art, and decided to give the book the benefit of the doubt (and adhere to the adage about judging books by their covers). However, after plowing determinedly through this book, I seriously regret my purchase. The product description says it is a "captivating epic" - I beg to differ for several reasons.

1. There is little to no character development, even the protagonist, Jao, is decidedly one-dimensional. Part of this is due to the author's struggle with the third person narrative. The novel is told in a very objective fashion, and only very rarely so we see the subjective, third person omniscient. As a result, a huge portion of the book is wasted on Jao's actions - she walks, she sits, she sometimes does somersaults, and she chatters pointlessly with other characters. While actions are described with excruciating detail, they do not tend to give the reader any glimpses into any of the characters' feelings, thoughts, or motivations. The other characters in the book are little more than cardboard figures, with little purpose other than populate the book. The author also seems to have difficulty introducing characters other than having them introduced through pure dialogue with the main character. Imagine if an entire book consisted of characters making their appearance by saying, "Hi Jao, my name is so and so, I am from this family in this area of China, and I am a servant/eunuch/concubine/etc, I am so happy/unhappy to meet you."

2. The character interactions are very stiff and awkward. Oftentimes, it seems as if a character is introduced and a conversation is held only in order to interject some trivial historical fact about the time and place. Clearly the author has done some research about ancient China. This research must have been tediously awful for her, since she sees the need to make sure we're aware of everything she's discovered by injecting facts everywhere, regardless of the plot flow or appropriateness of the moment. Furthermore, the author seems very inconsistent in her characterizations, even for minor characters. An early example of this in the novel is Nurse Wang, Jao's nurse from her family home who accompanies her on her journey to the palace. During the journey, the nurse discovers that Jao's half-brother has stolen the jewels that Jao's mother had packed for Jao for her future life as a woman in the imperial harem. The nurse only sees fit to tell Jao this when Jao specifically asks about her belongings, and does so in a careless, off-hand manner that seems very unusual. Then when Jao begs her to help her retrieve the stolen jewels, the nurse insists she must be paid until she is shamed into helping by the other characters who overhear the conversation. Later, when Jao arrives at the capital, the nurse discovers she is going to be sent away. Suddenly, the author inundates us with various characters, including Jao, saying how Wang is a good nurse, and Wang herself is suddenly portrayed as the loyal old servant, who won't touch her mistress's money, even when offered to her.

3. The writing is not tight at all. This novel sorely needed a good editor. The author is unable to make the story progress without going through every step relevant or not. A week long journey in the story is exactly that - seven days splayed out before us, with the minutiae of the character's daily actions, regardless of whether or not the days contain anything that contribute to the plot. Better authors make the time flow, cutting tedious journeys where nothing happens to one line, "ie. It took a week of hard travel before we arrived..." and then fleshing out the really interesting parts of the story where action occurs by going into detail when appropriate.

All in all, I would not recommend this book to anyone. In fact, it was bad enough that I deleted it from my kindle after reading it even though I have plenty of memory space. I just couldn't bear the reminder of such a waste of time and money.

Empress
By Summer
The novel, Empress, by Evelyn McCune, is an extraordinary epic of one woman's journey through life to become a powerful ruler of China. This story begins with the young Wu Jao, an insignificant child, who is summoned to the palace to become one of Emperor Taitsung's new concubines. Because of Wu Jao's honesty, intelligence and logic, combined with her innocence and beauty, she earns the friendship and love of the great emporer. Upon his death though, she finds herself banished to a convent.
The new emperor, Emperor Kaotsung, remembers Wu Jao from his childhood, how fond of her he was, and sends for her to return to the palace. When she returns, she finds herself in a place of horror. She fights for justice in this land that has changed for the worse since Emperor Taitsung's death. Evelyn McCune writes wonderful descriptions of seventh-century China, both the land and customs, and the character of Wu Jao is bold, strong and inspiring, though she doesn't go into much depth on other characters. Some parts were long while reading, but this is a novel rich in content and enchantment. She combines sophistication with treachery and creates the perfect atmosphere for her story. This was a wonderful reading experience.

Examines a philosophical movement to build a new image of Judaism that was more in line with the modern world. Focuses on the Torah of Bresc, the movement's primary document, and its founder, Solovetichik (1853-1918), but considers the work of 12 rabbis in all who made significant contributions to the movement.
