I adored this couple.
By NH
After reading about Lark in the previous books, I was extremely curious about her past. And let me tell you it was devastating and having to live with it after had to be hard. This book starts with Lark finally taking the first step into putting the past behind her and the person she meets to help her with that is Ryan (the new addition to the tattoo parlor). Ryan was an amazing hero. He was that perfect mix of sweet, shy but possessive at the same time.

The romance in this story not only deals with moving on from a painful past but how to build a relationship when two people come from two completely different worlds. It was written in a way that allowed us to see them work through those differences without being overridden with angst. There was tons of funny moments in this story (their text messages!) to balance the more heavy moments. Can we give a moment for Emilio because I think that he is such great father to his five daughters and I am always waiting for the "innocent" little talks he has with the guys (funny and my favorite parts).

It's a story I would recommend and another great addition to the series.

***** I can't wait for Wren's story and I absolutely love the hero who is hinted at as her love interest*****

Should have been a novella.
By Lady Ginger
POTENTIAL SPOILERS!!!! Here's the thing -- I started out loving this series, and I continue to buy books in it hoping that somewhere along the line the author will recapture the magic of the first couple of books. Maybe I should just give up. NOTHING happens in this book -- there's no real drama, and what little there is, is so contrived and resolved within half a chapter. Ryan and Lark meet and, despite everyone saying he won't date a hearing girl, he's into her immediately and they're dating. Then, he sees her scars and she confides in him about the origin immediately...eventhough she says this is something she's only talked to 2 people about before. There's all these hints that his family won't accept her as a hearing girl....guess what? They do accept her.....almost immediately! Then there's the obligatory "evil" ex-girlfriend, who really isn't that much of a villain and is only in the book for like 3 pages! I like these characters, and I like that they got together.....but that could have been covered in a chapter or two in another of the series' books or a 3 chapter novella. This story did not rate an entire book.

Another great novel in the Reed Brothers series!
By Jeraca
I couldn't belive it when I got a notification that a Tammy Falkner book was released and I DIDN'T ALREADY KNOW ABOUT IT!! So of course, while kicking myself, I ran to Amazon and one-clicked that sucker to get downloaded to my kindle ASAP.

Because I knew I would love it, just like all of her other books in the Reed Brothers series.

Have you read her books? No? WHY NOT!!!! These are not just New Adult novels. These have real life events that occur to people all over the country. That is why this is one of my all time favorite series and author.

At the end of this book, Lark talks about a very dark time she went through when she was 15. Instead of hiding from her past like she has been, she confronted what happened and that it wasn't something to be ashamed of, which she had been feeling for years. She finally knew that she was okay to feel how she was feeling and that there is a way to get help for what she went through. And she publicly announced it to the world. As a huge figure in the music industry, she can make a huge impact and difference in society, helping everyone who follows the media or even her music.

And this is why I love Falkner's stories. They have a real impact about very sticky situations and it's brought up in a way that can really make a difference in someone's life. I just want to make everyone read these books because of this importance, but also because I absolutely love the characters and how they crack me up.

It's slowly getting close to the end of the road for these characters, which will break my heart, but I own all of the books so I can most certainly come back and visit these pesky characters :)

Seriously, buy this book. Buy this series. I think it is one of the most influential series I've ever read - one that can really make a difference. All of the books have warmed my heart and I can only hope that there are people like the Reeds and the Zeroes in real life trying to make the same difference in people's lives.

Why Grow Up?: Subversive Thoughts for an Infantile Age, by Susan Neiman

Our culture is obsessed with youth--and why not? What's the appeal of growing old, of gaining responsibilities and giving up on dreams, of steadily trading possibility for experience?

The philosopher Susan Neiman argues that the absence of appealing models of maturity is not an accident: by describing life as a downhill process, we prepare young people to expect--and demand--very little from it. In Why Grow Up?, she challenges our culture of permanent adolescence, turning to thinkers including Kant, Rousseau, and Arendt to find a model of maturity that is not a matter of resignation. In growing up, we move from the boundless trust of childhood to the peculiar mixture of disappointment and exhilaration that comes with adolescence. Maturity, however, means finding the courage to live in a world of painful uncertainty without giving in to dogma or despair. A grown-up, Neiman writes, helps to move the world closer to what it should be while never losing sight of what it is.

Why Grow Up? is a witty and concise argument for the value of maturity as a subversive ideal: a goal rarely achieved in its entirety, and all the more worth striving for.

Review
Praise for Susan Neiman
"[Neiman] is not only a fine analyst but an acute stylist too, both scintillating and self-disciplined--a very rare thing in a philosopher." --Jonathan Ree, "The Times Literary Supplement"

Susan Neiman's "Why Grow Up "is a spirited defence of the aspiration to maturity. As she sagely observes, by clinging impotently to youth, we impoverish youth and maturity alike . . . So how, when the force of an entire culture seems to be ranged against maturity, can we make a serious case for growing up? The question takes Neiman to debates at the heart of Enlightenment moral philosophy . . . Neiman is an impassioned and lucid expositor of some very recondite concepts, with that rare ability . . . to convey the continued relevance and urgency of philosophy for our distracted times.--Josh Cohen "The Guardian "

An excellent work of popular, applied philosophy. Parts are as thought-provoking as reading Kant himself--and a damned sight easier.--Brandon Robshaw "The Independent "

This elegant and accessible book is the philosophical kick up the arse my generation desperately needs.--Tom Slater "Spiked "

To the barricades, armed with reason: Susan Neiman makes the case for toppling society's infantilism. Plumbing the depths of philosophy, she has written the most important book of the hour.--Katrin Schuhmacher "MDR Figaro "

Neiman makes the case not only for thinking but for political engagement. Her passion eliminates any sort of pedantry.--Birgit Schmidt "Tagesanzeiger "

The way Neiman interprets the Kantian idea of growing up--that of a never-ending task--has something subversive, and that's almost enough to make one young again.--Peter Praschl "Die Welt "

Neiman's view on using philosophy to guide ourselves into adulthood is a wonderful example of how the writings of past philosophers can be applied to our current lives. Her writing is accessible for those without a background in philosophy, and her book is a pleasant introduction to those unfamiliar with Kant and Rousseau.--Scott Duimstra "Library Journal "

Readers may find clarity in this small book of big ideas.--Kate Tuttle "The Boston Globe "

Between the IS and the OUGHT
By OwlSong
While this is a slim volume, it's one of the most fascinating & thoughtful books I've read in some time now. Philosopher Susan Neiman examines the current social-cultural glorification of perpetual adolescence, and its fear of actually growing up. There have been several other books dealing with this issue recently, but Neiman avoids their usual approach of analyzing current trends, preferring to look at what she considers the roots of the problem, which she sees as a response to modernity. She invites us to join her in reading the work of Rousseau & Kant, who would seem like opposites, avatars of Romanticism & the Enlightenment respectively -- but as she's quick to show, philosophy doesn't divide so neatly. In fact, these two influential, shaping ideals of the Western world strike me as a perfect example of what Jung called maintaining the tension of the opposites, in that both intertwine in the making of modern thought to this day.

And what precisely is the problem with not growing up? If I had to sum up Neiman's argument succinctly, it's that growing up is hard & requires us to go beyond comfortable & familiar but ultimately restrictive models of life -- and too many find that a daunting, even overwhelming effort, best not attempted in the first place. Moreover, it's obvious that consumer culture encourages such an attitude, the better to reduce the public to distracted drones, easily manipulated & used as a resource to be strip-mined & cast aside when empty. And of particular interest, Neiman explains how easily & eagerly the emotionally immature mind turns to fundamentalism of any & every stripe in its hunger for certainty.

In making her argument, Neiman offers a spirited & convincing defense of the Enlightenment, which is far more than the "dead white male" caricature so many have made of it in recent decades. Her own political bent is clearly progressive: but the ideal she's examining & proposing is thinking for one's own self, especially when applied to one's own dearly & often desperately held beliefs. And in these pages, she asks us to consider exactly why many of us have come to regard what should be just the first step on the road to maturity as the ultimate goal -- remaining young in the worst way, by remaining childish rather than incorporating useful childlike qualities (wonder, curiosity, creativeness) into becoming grown up.

Now, I'm hardly doing Neiman's argument justice in these few short paragraphs. But one of the many ideas I took away from her book is that the complexity & richness of genuinely growing up can't be reduced to a bumper sticker slogan, a Twitter comment, or a hashtag. What's required is an ongoing life of the mind, a willingness to give up reassuring illusions for a sometimes painful knowledge of the world -- and of ourselves.

Most highly recommended!

terrific book!
By an interested reader
I love this book--it's serious, thoughtful, and genuinely illuminating. I appreciate the insights it offers into the plight of people coming of age today, having little to grow up into by way of meaningful work or anything out there in the culture to connect to, other than products to buy; which explains their reluctance, the Peter Pan syndrome. “Those who rule society promote our dependency,” says Neiman, describing the “infantalizing processes” that offer us a “range of toys" while “ideas of a more just and humane world are portrayed as childish dreams to be discarded in favor of the real business of…finding a steady job that fixes our place in the consumer economy.” I also appreciate learning something about some of the philosophers I managed to miss out on in my education, whose ideas Neiman presents with clarity and passion. This is a book that dares to say something important about ways we live and might live better. Thank you, Susan Neiman! And thank you FSG, for restoring some faith that some publishers publish something other than junk.

a clear philosophical grounding for a familiar view
By Stanley Crowe
Susan Neiman has two focuses in this book. First, she wants to give a fairly commonsensical idea of maturity -- being "grown up" -- a philosophical grounding, and then she wants to make clear the extent to which the current state of our "western" culture makes maturity difficult to achieve. Her chapter on education, work, and travel -- all necessary for maturity, in her view -- is an analysis of how each of these has been corrupted or lessened in significance in the current state of our culture. That might sound like pretty anodyne analysis, but Neiman acutely connects the deplorable current trends to earlier analyses by philosophers like Kant and Rousseau, who saw in their times (the period of the 18th Century Enlightenment) what now look like the seeds of our current conditions and who also understood the mental tendencies that can lead people to become distracted by change or novelty instead of purposefully thinking about how to judge these trends maturely. Thus she can connect these earlier writers with later cultural critics with a philosophical bent like Nelson Goodman and others. The idea that our culture infantilizes us is not, of course, original with Neiman, nor is her insistence that the infantilized products of a culture are very vulnerable not just to commercial manipulation as "consumers" of the latest trendy things but also, and more dangerously, to political manipulation by ideologues whose success depends on the intellectual passivity of their followers.

Neiman's account of what it means to be grown-up is rooted in a philosophical understanding that goes back to Kant (and sees Kant as responding to deficiencies in the accounts of human development by Rousseau and Hume) and his location of the source of mature human mental functioning in the postulates of practical reason and in the exercise of judgement. She supports the Kantian vision with accounts of human development by modern developmental psychologists, and in doing so her intent seems to be to establish the prescience of Kant about human development -- she quotes quite a lot from Kant's treatment of pedagogy -- and to assure her 21st Century readers that the idea of maturity that she's advocating isn't retrograde or discredited. My own view is that she makes her case. She particularly focuses on the importance of the development of trust in early childhood, because it's on that basis that a child begins to be able to handle the awareness that the world as it is -- the "is" -- is not as it should be -- the "ought" -- so that when the child comes to adolescence and begins to notice things like unfairness, suffering, and even parental imperfection, he or she can negotiate them without being tempted to regress into a childish passivity or develop into a cynical adult who sees no point in trying to make the world over in the image of something better and who sees other human beings as no more than impediments to his personal projects or instruments that might be useful to him in the pursuit of these projects. The idea of maturity as involving a sense that ideals are worth pursuing as well as a "realistic" awareness of the limits that the world and the culture puts on our efforts is, as I suggested earlier, not new, but Susan Neiman's philosophical grounding of that insight is valuable, and the more so because she manages to write "philosophy" in a way that is clear, appealing, and often witty, without diminishing the seriousness of what she's talking about. Kant thought that "ordinary" people had the cognitive equipment to think philosophically, and implicitly Neiman is working on that humane and rather optimistic assumption too. Recommended.

Moonbeam Children's Book Award double silver medalist
A gnome, a girl and a dwarf fly north on an injured battledragon in the depth of winter to search for the missing Commander of the Stealth Dragon Services. Throw in a spy, an overweight dragon fledgling who’s so plump he cannot fly, and a renegade Sorcerer Warlock hot on their tail, and it seems like a quest doomed to failure from the outset.
But Quenelda is no ordinary girl, nor her gnome esquire, nor their guide and guardian the veteran dwarf Bonecracker Commando, Tangnost Bearhugger. Quenelda is a lone dragon whisperer in a world at war, where dragons have characters and voices of their own, and the Seven Kingdoms are under threat as never before from the amphibious hobgoblins who have united under a single warlord. The race to find the only man who can unmask the traitor at the heart of the realm is on!
Spread your wings and hang on tightly as mighty Stormcracker takes you on a roller-coaster ride across the Old Wall and into the frozen north where you can slide down the ice flumes to the subterranean world of the Ice Bear Clan, land on an iceberg, or explore the mysteries of the long abandoned sea citadel. If you like magic there is lethal maelstrom magic conjured up from the Abyss, or Quenelda’s often hilarious and always hazardous hit and miss efforts as she attempts to master the strongest dragon magic of all: that which flows through her very own veins,
Battles and adventures aplenty are balanced by humour and frothy foolishness at Foresight & Hindsight’s Exclusive Emporium as Armelia's marriage to Darcy draws closer. Hidden treason and ancient malice by friendships and bravery found in unlikely places.
So mount up, strap your dragonwings on, and for goodness sake, keep those honey tablets out of reach of Two Gulps Too Many!

Praise for The Dragon Whisperer and Flight to Dragon Isle.

One of the most captivating new books to be published for 8+ for some time . . . It made me laugh, cry and remember exactly what's so special about the time when you or your child live in hope of finding a dragon of your own (Amanda Craig The Sunday Times )

The one letdown of Hare’s work, is that, in marketing it towards children, adults might see it as ‘just another children’s book’ and pass it over. The back cover boasts a ‘9+’ age rating and I urge anyone nine or over to snap this read up. Verdict? A battle-dragon of a book! (Liz Wride, Fantasy Book Review)

What Harry Potter did for tales of wizardry, this book does for tales of dragons (Chicklish )

Recommended for Fans Of...: The Lord of the Rings. No, seriously. Also, fans of the Eragon series, the Harry Potter book, Susan Cooper's The Dark is Rising series, Cornelia Funke's Igraine the Brave, Sherwood Smith's Wren to the Rescue series, Patricia Wrede's Dealing With Dragons series, and etc., ad infinitum. will find something here to love. About the Author
Lucinda was born in Edinburgh and spent her childhood in rural East Lothian, where she spent much of her time roaming the beaches and woods, watching deer, pheasants, geese and rabbits, and listening to the bark of the seals float down the Firth of Forth on the evening breeze. It was then that her lifelong passions for animals - from earwigs to elephants - history, reading and drawing began. She spent years daydreaming about the Roman legions, medieval knights and the American west. Rather than write about the dreams and stories in her head, she drew them purely from her imagination. She is hopeless at drawing anything real in front of her. When she was eleven she was introduced to The Lord of the Rings which combined her own passions for history, legend and fantasy. Still her favourite book, she was thrilled with Peter Jackson's recent Lord of the Rings movie trilogy. After reading history at university she went on to pursue a busy and diverse career in many different companies and organisations, ranging from the Argus Newspaper Group in Cape Town, to the Scottish Post Office, and Edinburgh and Heriot-Watt Universities. After marrying Paul in 1999, Lucinda was able to return to those childhood passions, and very soon their house in Lasswade filled up with ever more rescued animals (dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs and ex-battery hens), books, and pastel and watercolour drawings and illustrations covered in dirty paw marks - the cats do always like to help out! This led to Paul's suggestion that she should try putting pen to paper - or rather, given Lucinda's chaotic writing style, get a laptop and start writing. The result was a rapid explosion of ideas and the start of The Dragonsdome Chronicles. It should be no surprise, then, that the characters at the heart of Dragon Lords Rising and the earlier books in the series - apart from sorcerers, gnomes and dwarfs - are in fact dragons; dragons with their own language and character, from the teasing Chasing the Stars to those with serious attitude like the battledragon Two Gulps & You're Gone. The dragons owe the inspiration for their names to Native American culture, and their characters draw on some of the family pets.

Story to grasp a child's imagination
By Animation
Every so often you want to become immersed in a fantasy story, to enter that world and care about what happens to the characters. You certainly get this in the Dragonsdome series. Gritty heroine, small hero-in-the-making - characters with whom a young(ish) child can identify feel empathy with - and of course, evil villains to arouse a child's keen sense of injustice.
A wonderful new look at dragons as large creatures with minds of their own.
I'm not going to spoil the plot - please buy the book and read it - then read it out to any child within hearing distance. Better still, go out and buy the first two books and there's a brand new book 4 just out. Enjoy!

This Close to Happy: A Reckoning with Depression, by Daphne Merkin

A New York Times Book Review Favorite Read of 2016

“Despair is always described as dull,” writes Daphne Merkin, “when the truth is that despair has a light all its own, a lunar glow, the color of mottled silver.” This Close to Happy―Merkin’s rare, vividly personal account of what it feels like to suffer from clinical depression―captures this strange light.

Daphne Merkin has been hospitalized three times: first, in grade school, for childhood depression; years later, after her daughter was born, for severe postpartum depression; and later still, after her mother died, for obsessive suicidal thinking. Recounting this series of hospitalizations, as well as her visits to myriad therapists and psychopharmacologists, Merkin fearlessly offers what the child psychiatrist Harold Koplewicz calls “the inside view of navigating a chronic psychiatric illness to a realistic outcome.” The arc of Merkin’s affliction is lifelong, beginning in a childhood largely bereft of love and stretching into the present, where Merkin lives a high-functioning life and her depression is manageable, if not “cured.” “The opposite of depression,” she writes with characteristic insight, “is not a state of unimaginable happiness . . . but a state of relative all-right-ness.”

In this dark yet vital memoir, Merkin describes not only the harrowing sorrow that she has known all her life, but also her early, redemptive love of reading and gradual emergence as a writer. Written with an acute understanding of the ways in which her condition has evolved as well as affected those around her, This Close to Happy is an utterly candid coming-to-terms with an illness that many share but few talk about, one that remains shrouded in stigma. In the words of the distinguished psychologist Carol Gilligan, “It brings a stunningly perceptive voice into the forefront of the conversation about depression, one that is both reassuring and revelatory.”

Review

"[Merkin narrates] with insight, grace and excruciating clarity, in exquisite and sometimes darkly humorous prose . . . For all its highly personal focus, [This Close to Happy] is an important addition to the literature of mental illness." ―Andrew Solomon, The New York Times Book Review (cover review)

"I will not be the last to thank Ms. Merkin for resisting this desire [to die] long enough to give us what is one of the most accurate, and therefore most harrowing, accounts of depression to be written in the last century . . . Ms. Merkin speaks candidly and beautifully about aspects of the human condition that usually remain pointedly silent." ―John Kaag, Wall Street Journal

"Wry, self-aware . . . a work of lacerating intelligence about a condition that intellect cannot heal." ―The New Yorker

"[A] triumph on many levels . . . As insightful and beautifully written as it is brave . . . This Close to Happy earns a place among the canon of books on depression . . . books that offer comfort to fellow depressives and elucidation for those lucky enough to have dodged its scourge." ―Heller McAlpin, Washington Post

"[A] stunning self portrait" ―Christian Lorentzen, New York

“A hybrid of memoir, case study, and confession, which joins such classics as Kay Redfield Jamison’s An Unquiet Mind and Andrew Solomon’s The Noonday Demon in the contemporary literature of depression. . . Merkin has written [a book] that will illuminate, challenge, and possibly even console.” ―Adam Kirsch, Tablet

"[This Close to Happy is] a testament to Merkin's commitment to capturing the grim distortions that depression can produce. . . This Close to Happy is more than a memoir of mental illness. Merkin is a good writer―perceptive, provocative, relentlessly interrogative of her own experience―and despite her difficult subject matter, she does, in this memoir, what good writers do: she sends urgent, cogent dispatches from another world, a protracted battlefield that we might not otherwise know about." ―Lisa Fetchko, Los Angeles Review of Books

"[A] compelling chronicle . . . Merkin's work is unique in describing the mundane burden of a deeply felt and closely observed life lived with depression . . . [H]er account of depression is both personal, literary and, at the same time, existential." ―Tom Teicholz, Forbes

“Merkin is a wonderful writer whose keen eye for detail and human foibles enables her to brilliantly light her subject, which is as much her as it is depression. In page after page, she delivers elegant, evocative prose.” ―Psychology Today

"This Close to Happy is as illuminating and hard to put down as it is painful." ―People

"Merkin is a fine stylist . . . She has at her disposal wide-ranging allusions, and she draws on poetry with a charming ease, a frankness that assumes her reader’s sophistication, even as she capably holds the reader’s hand and clarifies the relevance of a particular reference.” ―Forward

"Daphne Merkin exhibits shocking honesty in allowing readers to look into her journey. . . Her depth of writing experience on the topic comes through in emotion-packed prose . . . This book offers the education necessary for readers need to follow depression as it rises and falls in one woman’s life, as well as in the lives of thousands of others." ―Wyatt Massey, America Magazine

“Merkin’s deeply intimate account of living with clinical depression is illuminating, heartbreaking, and powerfully written. With lively prose and shrewd observations . . . Merkin’s exploration into her complicated yet unconditional devotion to her mother is rendered with compassion and profound perception. Merkin eloquently blends the personal with the researched; her intellectual tenacity and emotional rawness impress as much as they entertain. This book is a wonderful addition to literature about the unrelenting battle against depression.” ―Publishers Weekly (starred review)

“Dark thoughts hover over virtually every page of this mesmerizing memoir, and yet there is also the very real possibility of hope. . . Merkin’s exceptional book belongs on the same shelf as such classics as William Styron’s Darkness Visible (1990) and Kay Redfield Jamison’s An Unquiet Mind (1995).” ―Booklist (starred review)

“[Merkin] has a signature method to her writing, one that exuberantly crosshatches high- and lowbrow, and one that reveals and protects in equal measure.” ―Bookforum

“Opening This Close to Happy was like getting a long letter from my best friend at sleepaway camp. I had no idea it was this bad for you, was my first thought, and then, we have both been so paralyzed by grief. This is why we all feel so lonely right now―the longing, the depression, the comedy of it all, wrapped up in a story about sex and Judaism, our mothers. I felt so whole when snuggling up alone with Merkin’s brilliant, full-of-feeling masterpiece. I flew through it and hated to let go when it ended.” ―Jill Soloway

“Fierce, clear-eyed, and beautifully honest, Daphne Merkin’s is an essential voice. This Close to Happy, a lucid and elegantly written account of her lifelong struggles withdepression, unsettles and illuminates in equal measure. This is an important book.” ―Claire Messud

“If the face presented to the world is a mask to protect ourselves, Daphne Merkin bravely removes hers, revealing the truth of herself, courageously exploring, seeking―and sometimes even finding―the hope that glimmers at the end of the tunnel. Please read as soon as possible.” ―Gloria Vanderbilt

“This beautifully written tale of Daphne Merkin’s depressive demons is by far the most accurate and human account of depression and its impact that I have ever read. I highly recommend it, both to those in the mental health professions and to those who care about the suffering of their loved ones.” ―Glen O. Gabbard, M.D.

“The greatness of this book is in the way Merkin takes the measure of the adversary.” ―Peter Sacks

“D. W. Winnicott wrote that depression is the fog over the battlefield. In this extraordinarily lucid and moving book, Daphne Merkin illuminates the dark and desperate battle that depression can be. This is a book for all those who know nothing about depression and for those who know too much.” ―Adam Phillips

“This Close to Happy belongs on the shelf with William Styron's Darkness, Visible and Andrew Solomon's The Noonday Demon. It brings a stunningly perceptive voice to the forefront of the conversation about depression, one that is both reassuring and revelatory.” ―Carol Gilligan, author of In a Different Voice

"This Close to Happy is honest, fearless in the way we have come to expect from Daphne Merkin, and, as a bonus, frankly informative. From Merkin we get the inside view of navigating a chronic psychiatric illness to a realistic outcome. As she writes, 'the opposite of depression is not a state of unimaginable happiness, but a state of relative all-right-ness.' For some, that insight alone will speak volumes. Her candor discussing the fears, tribulations, and triumphs of a lifetime of treatment will be valuable for anyone who loves someone with depression but makes necessary reading for the mental health professionals on the other side of the couch." ―Harold S. Koplewicz, M.D., President, Child Mind Institute

Depression Unmasked
By Susan M. Baumann
Brilliant, scathing, heartbreaking and raw. This is the most powerfully honest book on depression and child abuse that I have ever read. Merkin's bereft childhood of brutality and lack seems to be the fertile ground that created her despondency and the tenacious, pervasive longing for suicide. Her parents appear blatantly psychologically disordered, meting out damage as casually as one would order lunch. Merkin is by turns, attached to, and repelled by, a vicious mother, who seems both stunningly narcissistic and psychopathic. I was frustrated by Merkin's struggle to detach from her mother, much in the same way that abused wives return to their abusers, expecting different outcomes. Merkin was drowning in depression, yet repeatedly returned to her parents seeking solace, approval and a revisionist history that neither parent was emotionally equipped to provide. The repeated returns to the abusive environment only seemed to exacerbate the depression and parental control, all in a continuous self-perpetuating loop. I rooted for Merkin to cut the toxic ties in favor of mental health and self actualization, but her journey to contentment was more curcuitous. I applaud Merkin's ability to craft riveting and beautiful prose from the wreckage and horror of her early years. This book is both difficult to read at times, and equally hard to put down. My hope is that Merkin never chooses to succumb to the lure of suicide, but instead continues to write, to enjoy simple pleasures and allows herself to heal. A highly recommended read.

I really disliked this book.
By Nancy J.
I found that reading this book made me more depressed than anything I have ever read. The chapters were quite similar in descriptions of her sad depression and childhood, over and over again. I could not find anything helpful or hopeful in this book. Finally, I skipped to the very last chapter to see if it ended with success, but no, nothing was solved, she was still sad. If you are suffering from clinical depression, this will make you feel worse.

Insightful, helpful firsthand account of depression
By Rose
I read this while severely depressed and found it helpful. This isn't the point of the book—it's a beautifully-written, insightful, firsthand account of someone's lifelong struggle with depression—but as I imagine a large number of people who pick up this book will, like me, be looking for some insight into their own situation, I'll say that I, for one, found some. I, like Daphne, sometimes struggle to accept depression as an illness as opposed to a personal failing, even as I live it, and reading someone else's honest account—experiencing empathy and finding many shared experiences along the way—encouraged me to be a bit kinder to myself.

My Infant Enjoys Piggy Paints
By CJRex
This book is super cute and my son enjoys it. It has nice illustrations and things you can point out (oh look, that painting is so big he has to use a helicopter, and that one is so tiny he has to wear his glasses to see it!) but the pictures aren't overwhelming. There are just enough words on each page to keep the pages turning and an infant interested. I gave this one 4 stars because "big" and "little" are used twice. I like this one a lot but feel the author's other book, Robot Kitties, is better. Robot Kitties uses more words (far, near, high, low, fast, slow, etc.). I say get both. A kid can't have too many books.
