What can I say it's a textbook, it's new, I'll hopefully read it. It's funny that an online computer class uses a dated text book instead of the internet, go go USA education!

Generally a good book

This book has a lot of basic stuff in it. It is rather easy to read and simplistic. It is a good introductory kinetics book, but be prepared to take advantage of other resources in order to accomplish your kinetics task. Not necessarily a great reference book for your graduate studies.

Kinetics for mature, sensible adults. Eye protection required.

As a medicinal chemist and enzymologist I found this book to be not to my taste. Very little attention is devoted to Michaelis Mentin and the steady state approximation. Nor is very much attention paid to the organic chemistry of the rate laws of organic reactions.

But I suppose this is necessary. This is a general text on kinetics and in that regard it is a very good one. For starters it's small, making it easy to carry. This compactness of size leads to a corollary compactness in language. It's brevity makes difficult concepts a little easier to understand because they aren't smothered in endless confusing verbiage and examples.

With the knowledge comprised here you should be prepared to utilize kinetics in almost all circumstances. However, for specific functions, such as enzymology, a more specific book on the subject is recommended.

Espenson's book is ok. It's a little difficult to read at times, but covers the basics fairly well. More references would be useful. A good introductory book.

Great overview of how data and the Internet of Things are already revolutionizing our lives

This book, all 353 pages, is a whirlwind tour through the impact that sensors, connectivity, and data are going to have on our lives (and how our lives are already changing). While this book is clearly not an instruction guide or a deep dive into any use case, the book presents dozens of perspectives and hundreds of examples to make you think. From the German railways, to museums, to GE aircraft engines, to Mercedes Benz and Nissan cars, to auto insurance "by the mile (or km)," to universities, to banking, to politics, to transportation, to Apple Stores, this book has vignettes and perspectives from many experts, academics, and practitioners in just about every field. How should you think about how the evolving digital revolution will affect your company, your society, and your life? This book will make you think.

The introduction by Marc Benioff was short but insightful, just as a bonus.

I enjoyed the book - it gave me some great information, but it also made me think. Worth a few hours of your time ...

Trite and Boring!

Author Streibich has credible credentials in the technology industry - both academic and actual network experience. Already there are over 4.5 billion connected on social networks, and it is estimated that there will be 3.5 billion networked products within a few short months. I, however, began the book with the strong suspicion that most current uses for product networking add little of value (eg. automatic thermostats already cover most needs for varying temperature); on the other hand, in one of my prior predictions I contended that PCs would never be serious competitors to mainframes (unable to handle large data flows), nor serious tools in most people's households. As for Toyota etc. providing tweet-like updates to alert drivers of low tire pressure - there is already onboard technology to accomplish that, and I don't trust card-dealers' service advice. As for Amazon, the jury is still out - it has done interesting things, but is unable to reliably make a decent profit, and the huge amount of added shipping and handling generated doesn't appeal to me either. Trackside railroad sensors - any decent trucking company already has software to better handle that too. So, I began the book - hoping to being proven wrong, again.

Chapters One and Two ('Introducing the Digital Enterprise,' 'The Digital Journey') were a waste of paper and time - just vague generalities. Chapter Three ('Create Smarter Products') was another snore - we already know about Google's self-driving car, and until that becomes widespread, integrating drivers with email, Facebook, etc. seems dangerous and stupid. A 'smarter shower' provides electronic controls for adjusting temperature and switching between rain-shower and hand-held showerhead flows - what does that have to do with any of today's world problems such as flagging economies (offshoring, automation), dysfunctional governments, global warming, etc?

And similarly, on and on and on it goes.

Expect to be challenged, expect to come away smarter

As a student of the enterprise, I have learned as much from Vinnie Mirchandani as any other author. Why? Because he challenges lazy assumptions. I know this from reading his previous books The New Polymath and the New Technology Elite. This latest is a collaboration with Karl-Heinz of Software AG. Let's face it - the idea of the Digital Enterprise is rapidly becoming a clich�. Streibich and Mirchandani counter the hype in the only way you can really counter it: with field research. Each key component of the so-called digital enterprise is backed up by customer case studies and examples.

The message is a potent one: the use of technology to transform business with everything from smart products to predictive data is NOT primarily attributable to enterprise software vendors, no matter how much chest-thumping they might do. Companies in each industry are applying these tech insights to separate from the competition. I was glad to see Streibich and Mirchandani included chapters that look at the human element of these industries, such as the chapter on services re-invention and the chapter on human capital.

One thing to keep in mind is that like Mirchandani's other books, this one is packed full of field examples. At 350+ pages this is not a quick skim. But that's the point. To really understand the digital enterprise and move beyond easy sound bites, you have to work at it. It's work that can change your career (or your company), so I recommend putting in the time.

Enjoyable but short caper

This book was what i was expecting light simple fun. Entertaining enough. Was however quite short and took me an hour ish to read. Could have done with a few more chapters. A bit more effort developing the male character rupert, roger or something would have been good. Pretty sure it started with an R. Seemed like a nice guy and did something with computers. Why anyone would fall in love with him I dont know. The author didnt bother to explain that.

Easy Read

I enjoyed this book. A nice light read! It took little brain power and was pretty predictable. It reminded me of a cross between the movie "Wedding Planner" with Jennifer Lopez and Matthew McConaughey and the book "The Devil Wears Prada." I particulary like reading books like this one after reading something with a deeper plot or an emotional storyline.

Parents, please look through the preview of this book. As an adult, this is superb.

I love graphic novels and I love Neil Gaiman, but parents—please look through the preview of this book.

Amazon recommends this book for kids aged 8 through 12. I’m not sure parents are aware of the drawn slit-throat-gushing blood. Before purchasing, consider how your kids will react to a drawn depiction of the mom, dad, and sibling lying dead on the floor and beds, covered in blood.

From an adult perspective, I think this book is great. The team did an excellent job capturing the story and portraying it with top-notch, full-colored artwork. In my review of Gaiman’s original book I stated a desire for more illustrations—they delivered! The essence of everything is here and in superb detail.

This book is worthy of the other 5-star ratings it has received. However, because it is being marketed to children, some of whom are still impressionable with fantasy (e.g. Santa Clause) a lower rating is needed in order to raise awareness. Parents, you know your own children, proceed with this understanding.

Beautiful graphic adaptation of The Graveyard Book.

"The Graveyard Book: Volume 1" is the first volume in a two-part graphic novel adaptation of Neil Gaiman's 2008 children's novel "The Graveyard Book." Artist P. Craig Russell, who is a long-time collaborator with Gaiman and took care of the graphic adaptation, figures prominently on the cover, but be warned that each chapter is drawn by a different artist: Kevin Nowlan (chapter 1), P. Craig Russell (chapter 2), Tony Harris & Scott Hampton (chapter 3), Gale Showman (chapter 4), Jill Thompson (chapter 5) and Stephen B. Scott (Interlude).

In the 192 pages of the first volume, which covers Chapter One through Five plus the Interlude of the original novel, we start with the toddler who will become known as Bod (short for Nobody), whose knack for wandering off (to the despair of his parents) saves his life as the mysterious stranger Jack slaughters his family for reasons as yet unknown. Bod had wandered off to the nearby graveyard, where he's adopted by its ghostly residents and also taken under the wings of the enigmatic Silas, who's neither living nor death and makes Jack lose the trail. In the next chapters, we see how Bod grows up as a child, learns the alphabet, meets up with Scarlett and becomes friends with her (and gets her into trouble), as well as his adventure with the ghouls. We also see how his desire to help witch Elizabeth, who's buried outside the graveyard in unconsecrated ground, get a headstone, leads him again into trouble, and this volume ends right after the Macabray dance with the short Interlude, in which we meet up again with Jack.

Story-wise, it stays very faithful to the original prose novel, with words and art meshing very well together. It really shows that Gaiman is equally adept at working in prose as well as the very different comic book-format. Overall, the art gives a very cohesive interpretation, and when you move onto a new chapter and a new artist, the style never changes so much it will jar you out of the story. Of course, because each artist has his or her own signature style, this may lead to personal preferences. In my case, it's the art by Tony Harris & Scott Hampton I liked the least. I would give their chapter 3 stars, while I would award Jill Thompson's art 4 stars. But the rest get a solid 5 stars, with the incomparable P. Craig Russell getting 5+ stars. How I wish he had done the complete graphic novel himself, but alas... Anyway, a beautiful graphic adaptation of an already wonderful children's novel, that really makes the story come alive. Recommended!

An Excellent Graphic Adaptation of a Wonderful Book!

Let me state up front that I love Neil Gaiman's books, and I especially loved The Graveyard Book. So I was either going to love this adaptation or be disappointed and end up hating it. As you can guess from my rating, I loved it. Can I give it more stars? Six or seven? Best thing I've read this year.

Wonderful Research and Insight!

Anthea Callen trained as a painter. She writes with a painter's insight. She also has a brilliant mind. The book is thoroughly researched. It is written with more emphasis on the materials and physical techniques of the Impressionists than on sociological or philosophical analysis. When she does go into those areas she does so with restraint and great intelligence. I give this book the highest recommendation particularly as a book for painters or for those interested in the intricacies of painting.

Best book on Impressionist painting out there!

This is the best book on Impressionist painting techniques ever written. I can see why copies go for such high prices. I saved up for six months to buy this and I was not disappointed! Well-written and profusely illustrated with artwork and photos. A wonderful addition to my art library and perfect for the art historian. If you are interested in Impressionism, this a must-have. It's not a how-to, but it does tell pretty much how they did it. EXCELLENT!

Impressive but Impractical

This is a very good book (for what it is), but it is quite a difficult read, with much content that has little practical value for most of us. It is a scholarly (i.e., academic) history of opinions and processes that informed Impressionist painting. It is undeniably impressive in its scholarship, its substantive weight, and its physical dimensions--this is a big book having large oversize pages full of single-spaced small print. Its research and detail are, I think, remarkable. Indeed it presents detail upon detail upon technical detail. It is both exhaustive and exhausting. It thoroughly covers many topics that I simply have no need or desire to know about. This is a book for art-history professors.

I had wanted to see this book for two reasons: I wanted to learn to paint like the Impressionists, and I hoped to see their paintings in superior reproductions. In each case, I was disappointed.

The quality of the reproductions is very good (more than adequate to illustrate the text's points), but NOT outstanding. And this definitely is not a how-to-paint lesson manual. If, from this book, you ever learn to paint like the Masters, it will only be indirectly, from inference rather than from clear instruction. And you will need to dig through some fairly thick and sometimes diffuse language to find information you might consider useful. In fact, many of the opinions and processes discussed in the book are contradictory--and (to her credit) the author does not offer her opinion about which ways and opinions were best.

Believe it or not, the foregoing is not meant to disparage the book per se, because it is excellent, FOR WHAT IT IS (and on those particular terms it deserves 4 stars). I have only meant to tell prospective buyers just what it is. This book was not very helpful to me, and I think it would not be very useful to most readers, including most painters and art aficionados.

I'm glad the book exists--it is a genuine scholarly achievement--and if someone were to give it to me as a gift, I'd gratefully recieve it (and I'd probably look at it once in a while). But I would not pay much to buy it. (Borrow it from a public library before deciding to buy.)

The selections are arranged in chronological order and include his three book-length essays, "The Fire Next Time," "No Name in the Street" and "The Devil Finds Work." Baldwin's writings on the civil rights movement, his analysis of Richard Wright's Native Son (Harper, 1940) and his thoughts on his childhood experiences are a few of the topics in this volume. Baldwin details his hopes, his joys, his bitterness and his feelings about himself, other blacks and especially white America. The earlier works seem somewhat theatrical and histrionic, his later ones toned down to a more pure and clear style. All of them are brilliant, intense and passionate. About the Author
James Baldwin's celebrated works of fiction include Go Tell It on the Mountain, Giovanni's Room, Another Century, Tell Me How Long the Train's Been Gone, If Beale Street Could Talk, Just Above My Head, and the short story collection Going to Meet the Man. He was also the author of a book of poetry, Jimmy's Blues, two dramatic works, Blues for Mister Charlie and The Amen Corner, and many works of nonfiction, including Nobody Knows My Name, The Fire Next Time, and Notes of a Native Son. Born in Harlem in 1924, he lived for many years in France, where he died in 1987.

Worth Every Penny!

Baldwin eloquently takes us into the horrific world of life for people of color in the United States. What's sad is that nothing much has changed since this collection of non-fiction from 1948 - 1984 was published. But it's important for those of us who are white to understand this history, our inhumanity, our common humanity, and begin to undo what we have done. Baldwin is one of this country's greatest writers, and the price of this volume of stories is testament to that, and well worth "The Price of the Ticket."

my mentor told me to get this book by baldwin if i didn't get anything else. i haven't purchased my own copy yet, but my friend is very happy and in love with this book. a collection of writings by one of the most profound and eloquent speakers on america ever!

How do you critique James Baldwin? What a wonderful insight from the African American point of view. Baldwin was a master of painting a picture of how history was unfolding for him. Living in the rural Midwest I have had my eyes opened to his struggles.
