How is nihilism our new condition?

Vattimo continues to issue his argument for a soft-ontology after metaphysics has suffered from the end of absolutes. The end is nothing...nihilism. I am convinced that Vattimo and others like him are correct in accessing our age as technocratic nihilism but I am not convinced that Vattimo's soft-ontology is much more than a "practical" excuse to live as though there is meaning even though tying life to shared experience is impossible. The only real impossibility is that life is impossible. Is a new motivation for innovation and culture possible if we admit with Vattimo that nihilism "gesture[s] toward a new human experience" (26)? I am not convinced that he demonstrates this. Instead I see Vattimo arguing for a kind of soft-ontology that attempts to balance the reification of objective language with the broader givens of life experience that are coordinated in forms of life. Although I am not convinced of Vattimo's vision for life and society after nihilism I do think this book is worthy of a serious read.

Vattimo's hard to accept tesis about a weak thinking.

This book is important to understand postmodernism. However, i don't image american readers accepting Vattimo's tesis about weak subjet right to have a place in world. Why modern civilization has impossed to us the obligation of being strong and the first in every action as the only way to be allowed as a member of this society?

This story confirms that with FAITH in God and hardwork, anything is possible!

I thoroughly enjoyed Fatih's journey. This was a very easy read that covered Faith's life from a small girl with stars in her eyes to a young woman, widow, and mother. I was really surprised at how forthcoming Faith wass in revealing her many sexual dalliances and abortions. She held nothing back, including the several beatdowns she dished out to the women who were having affairs with her husband,Biggie Smalls, including Lil Kim. She was definitley not a shrinking violet when it came time to whip some you know what. But admittedly, she was not able to bring the same bravado to the table when dealing with record executives, included Sean Combs. Eventually Faith is able to stand up for herself. She truly went through a great deal, some at her own hand and other incidents due to the actions of others. I admire how she joined forces with Biggie's mom after his death to settle his estate and through it all she strived to keep her family together. The book had me looking up various songs on Youtube that she had recorded, but that I wasn't familiar with. There was one song made famous by the group Rose Royce--"Love Don't Live Here Anymore" that Faith didn't want to record, but at the urging of Sean Combs, she did record it with Mary J. Blige. Subsequently, Mary asked for her vocals to be removed, because of a disagreemenw with Sean Combs. The verision I listened to on Youtube does not have Mary's voice. Overall, this was an engaging read and a nice musical trip down memory lane.

I Didn't Believe Her Story About Tupac..

The reason I took a star away is because her story about Tupac didn't add up. She claimed that she never pursued Tupac and how he was jumping in her limo and wanting to be seen with her, but I see pictures on the internet of her posing happily with Tupac.
I do believe that she had sex with him like Pac has always said and that Faith is the person that's lying.
I don't believe the full story about Lil Kim either and Mary J(why Mary J was mad at her) I think she knew why. I heard rumors that she slept with Mary's man, KC(Jodeci).
Other than that, it was a good autobiography that kept me interested.

Only a few years younger than faith and biggie I remember all the buzz. I cried when Big died. To read all the details of the life they shared and what faith has overcome has been inspiring and emotional. What a strong woman. As she wrote about BIG's death and funeral, I teared. 20 years, I cant believe it and it feel like yesterday that hip hop died.

Handbook on charcoal making

This Handbook on Charcoal Making is seemingly written by a historion rather than an engineer. That's OK for most because the technology for this art is so primitive. Virtually bereft of modern techniques and process controls data (which are needful), in my opinion, there is still enough information of the ancient ways in this book to design new machines and processes that are patentable. This is what I plan to do.

West is the author of more technical books, such as his recent "Complex Webs", but here he succeeds in presenting his material in a clear and fun conversation manner, with modern and historical examples, accessible to a reader interested in why the world is uncertain, unequal and unfair. Examples range from extreme statistics for predicting natural catastrophes and power grid failures to population growth that has defied Malthus. Pertinent topics, including tipping points, maximal entropy, and intermittent synchronization are also covered and applied to real world situations in economics, health, the environment, and social behavior. The writing has a wealth of insights and explains the underlying mathematics needed to go beyond the useful, but with limited application, bell shaped normal distribution. The book is a good starting point for those wanting to explore the complexity of our time.

About the Author
Bruce R. Munson, Professor of Engineering Mechanics at Iowa State University since 1974, received his B.S. and M.S. degrees from Purdue University and his Ph.D. degree from the Aerospace A Engineering and Mechanics Department of the University of Minnesota in 1970.

From 1970 to 1974, Dr. Munson was on the mechanical engineering faculty of Duke University. From 1964 o 1966, he worked as an engineer in the jet engine fuel control department of bendix Aerospace Corporation, South Bend, Indiana.

Dr. Munson's main professional activity has been in the area of fluid mechanism education and research. He has been responsible for the development of many fluid mechanics courses for studies in civil engineering, mechanical engineering, engineering science, and agricultural engineering and is the recipient of an Iowa State University Superior Engineering Teacher Award and the Iowa State University Alumni Association Faculty Citation.

He has authored and coauthored many theoretical and experimental technical papers on hydrodynamic stability, low Reynolds number flow, secondary flow, and the applications on hydrodynamic stability, low Reynolds number flow, secondary flow, and the applications of viscous incompressible flow. He is a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and The American Physical Society.

Donald F. Young, Anson Marston Distinguished Professor Emeritus in Engineering, is a Faculty member in the Department of Aerospace Engineering and Engineering Mechanics at Iowa State University. Dr. young received his B.S. degree in mechanical engineering, his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in theoretical and applied mechanics from Iowa State, and has taught both undergraduate and graduate courses in fluid mechanics for many years. In addition to being named a Distinguished Professor in the College of engineering, Dr. Young has also Received the Standard Oil Foundation Outstanding Teacher Award and the Iowa State University Alumni Association Faculty Citation. He has been engaged in fluid mechanics research for more than 35 years, with special interest in similitude and modeling and the interdisciplinary field o biomedical fluid mechanics. Dr.. Young has contributed to many technical publications and is the author or coauthor of two textbooks on applied mechanics. He is a fellow of the American society of Mechanical Engineers.

Theodore H. Okiishi, Associate Dean of Engineering and past Chair of Mechanical engineering at Iowa State university, has taught fluid mechanics courses there since 1967. He received his undergraduate and graduate degrees at Iowa State.

Form 1965 to 1967, Dr. Okiishi served as a U.S. Army officer with duty assignments at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration Lewis Research Center, Cleveland, Ohio, where he participated in rocket nozzle heat transfer research, and at the combined Intelligence Center, Saigon, Republic of south Vietnam, where he studied seasonal river flooding problems.

Professor Okiishi is active in research on turbomachinery fluid dynamics. He and his graduate students and other colleagues have written a number of journal articles based on their studies. some of these projects have involved significant collaboration with government and industrial laboratory researchers with two technical papers winning the ASME Melville Medal.

Dr. Okiishi has received several awards for teaching. He has developed undergraduate and graduate courses in classical fluid dynamics as well as the fluid dynamics of turbomachines.

He is a licensed professional engineer. His technical society activities include having been chair of the board of directors of The American society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) International Gas Turbine Institute. He is a Fellow of� The American Society of (ASME) International� Gas Turbine Institute. He is a Fellow of The American society of Mechanical Engineers and the editor of the Journal of Turbomachinery.

Excellent for starters in fluid mechanics engineering.

I bought the book by mistake since I was looking for a more physical introduction to fluid mechanics. However, once I started reading, I could not stop. The book is a pleasure to read. Every concept is explained crystal clear. No single step is skipped. Almost every concept is illustrated with one or more very detailed solved examples. It is frequent in most technical books to find how the level of clarity degrades progressively as you approach the end of the book. This is not the case. Every chapter up to the very end is carefully arranged and the level is maintained.

The book requires very little physical background since every topic starts from the very begging. The huge number of topics covered and easy reading makes it ideal for undergraduate students. The accompanying CD provides a browsable e-version of the book, more problems, some advanced topics and an extensive list of videos illustrating the book material.

The book follows a full engineering and practical approach. If what you are looking for is a more theoretical work or a more strict physical approach, you will better look somewhere else.
