Fantastic Resource

A solid number sense is essential to success in learning mathematics. Number Talks provides a very structured, scaffolded approach to teaching strategies that help students build number sense. It is filled with tons of leveled problems (NO teacher prep here) demonstrating exactly what kids should be able to do with each strategy at each grade level. This is incredibly helpful when trying to quickly analyze where a child's "holes" are in number sense development. I work with gifted elementary students who are often adept at hiding their mathematical weaknesses, but once I sniff them out (a third grader who is still counting on), I can quickly and easily use Number Talks for an impromptu "strategy meeting." (I also love the rich strategy comparison conversations that come once students know multiple strategies.)

Unforgettable math book.

This is an unforgettable math book. It's for the visual learner — especially for the learner who can't stand silly manipulatives. The book only uses 2 kinds of manipulatives and they are both abstract (even the child who can't stand counting using silly colorful teddy bears will love it) and simple to make (even for the mother who can't stand DIY projects). I used velcro and paper to make one of them and I recycled the frame from one of my son's weaving projects to make the other. I loved this book even though I hate DIY projects -- I swear. Most importantly, this book made my son and I love to do math together. Basically, there are two kinds of pedagogical books out there: the ones made for classrooms or afterschool/homeschool situations and the ones made for parents. This one is exceptional because it is made for all the situations listed above. Don't be intimidated by the classroom lessons in the DVD. I am giving it only 4 stars because the section for 4th and 5th grades were too repetitive and similar to the K-3rd grade sections but if all you need is a great book for K-3, then this is for you.

Not only does he give you the definition of the item in question, he then will give you his opinion of its usefullness. Going one step further, he will many times also give you an improved version as well.
Readers of his "Mutual Fund Forcaster" and other newsletters will find in-depth analysis of Mr. Fosback's favorite measures of market health.
This book is like a short course in understanding the stockmarket. If you read it you will probably know more than most professors! Consider this the text book to Investing 201!

Those of you who have tried to tackle the area of market timing and TA should use this as the base book to understanding and APPLYING technical analysis. IT is not limited to TA in that it will present a comprehensive analysis of the major factors to look at in trading the markets. Start with this book if you are a beginner and if advanced -- buy it to reinforce or test your foundation. If you can understand the approach of this book and learn how to apply the a base set of concepts, you will improve your trading skill and profits.

While the information is considerably out of date and shouldn't be followed directly, the approach to testing and measuring indicators is far better than most advice around today. Very little mathematical ability is required to get a sense for the ideas in the book, and it is a good read.

A hard book to review

This was a hard book to review, as I loved the unique writing style of the author. Very seldom do I need to actually look up words for there meaning, but this was an exception, and they would turn out to be the perfect work for the situation. The books content is centered around illegal commercial fishing, sailing, police work, a realistic lead charter who at times is hard to like, think Humphrey Bogart for the part. It takes place in the sea between Scotland and Ireland and the many islands.

A Fine Modern Nautical Storyteller

Sam Llewellyn's growing number of UK maritime mysteries continue to entertain, especially if you're a boater. In the nautical parts the author writes about sailboats and power vessels with credible authority, but even if you're a complete lubber you can enjoy his stories. Black Fish's hero is a bit more of a scoundrel than in the previous works, a rather shiftless fellow, and maybe not too too sharp, but thanks to much undeserved luck, he manages to muddle through, and the bad guys get their just deserts. Read this book and there is a very good chance you'll want to dive into all of Mr. Llewellyn's previous works.

Llewellyn is the thinking yachtsman's yarn spinner. Where Conrad took you to dark places populated by nasty men you never wanted to meet, Llewellyn takes you to places you know filled with people you try to avoid at the bar. I wish he'd write more of them.
