Greg Dean is a former Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus clown, a street performer, and a regular at the Comedy Store in Hollywood. Through his popular "Stand-Up Comedy Workshop" at the Santa Monica Playhouse, Dean has worked with many of today's top comics. He currently lives in Los Angeles, California.

Not Just for Stand-Up Comics!

Greg's book has really helped me on 2 independent fronts: The effective performance of stand-up comedy, and COMEDY WRITING! This is an important point for those who are writers, not performers. Of all the books I've ever read on comedy, this is the first one to actually outline a concrete process for quickly generating a significant volume of humorous material. This should be very useful for anyone doing any kind of script writing.
Naturally, the writing methods described in the book are also quite helpful for performers, as are the in-depth instructions for actually doing stand up comedy. I've used this book as a constant source of inspiration in rehearsing and to raise my spirits right before performances. It's literally the kind of book that I can open to just about any page, read for 10 minutes, and come away with renewed energy and enthusiasm.
Some books I've read on this subject have a few good parts, but this one has high-quality material from start to finish. If you're looking for a true textbook on comedy (both writing and performance), this is the only book you'll need.

Bright Light on Even Dark Subjects

Greg Dean's "Step By Step To Stand Up Comedy" is like good-tasting yet powerful medicine. His uncommonly simple and sensical way of explaining the structure of comedy and the strategy for creating great comedy, is brilliant. I find this book an instant and constant idea-generator for me. As the author of the book, "Jack and Jill, Why They Kill," my subject--kids killing kids--could be perceived by those not wearing sunglasses as a dark topic. However, with "Step By Step To Stand Up Comedy" as my constant coach, I have been able to illuminate and elevate my topic so much that people don't exodus the hall when I am introduced but actually stay for my entire presentations, as much for the jokes they contain, as for the vital message of how to rear violence-free, bully-free, and gun-free children. Bravo, Greg Dean...and thank you!

FINALLY: A G R E A T comedy book!!!!!

It's amazing how many books there are on writing and performing comedy, and how bad many of them are. I collect books on comedy and performers and I can say that FINALLY there is a book on comedy writing and performing that can TRULY make a difference. Greg Dean's system clears away a lot of the mystery and, step by step, can help you WRITE funnier, VIEW things funnier, and BE funnier. He clearly has spent years of time and thought on his system...and it W O R K S. How do I know? I'm a performer (ventriloquist -- I work with a dummy but he is not running for president...Greg is NOT responsible for that joke, folks..). His system has already helped me in countless ways. In fact, I will say it changed my whole way of looking at, writing, and performing humor. This book is not only one that I like for myself, but one that I'll be ordering for other people who are interested in comedy as GIFTS. This is NOT your usual how-to comedy book that you read and stick on a shelf. You'll use it -- and be influenced by it.

Absolutely brilliant book for men

This is a great style book for men since there are few good ones out there for us and, if we spend too much time thinking about it, some people think we're you know what!
The main thrust of this book is: different color and shades look best on certain people depending on their skin coloring but that isn't limited to race either. The four areas are: winter, spring, summer and fall. Few variations in each one, too.
Now, that alone would give this a four star but the author goes beyond that: she covers hair styles based on face shapes, combining colors, clothes to buy based on your dressing style (these are broken down, too) and advice for what to seek out based on your color styles and your dressing styles. For instance, a more formal type gets certain types of jackets and slacks whereas a casual type gets more jeans and the like.
Excellent book. Highly recommend.

Still Feels Current 19 Years Later

I have not quite finished reading this book but am very excited about it. It really is a good comprehensive guide for men. These are difficult lessons for men to digest and they are presented fairly straightforwardly and in a manner that is simple to understand. Despite the fact that the book is almost twenty years old, it is one of the few where I find the illustrations do not seem particularly out of date. On one point I may have to disagree with Ms Jackson. She states that a man should not mix three patterns when wearing a suit, shirt, and tie. I find that in modern dress, this can distinguish the men from the boys. I do agree that this is somehting that not all men will be able to do effectively so it may be best to avoid it (which may be the authors point in discouraging it). If you want to go one step beyond this book, pick up Alan Flusser's Style and the Man. With these two resources, you will have no excuse for not looking your best every day.

I'm excited about this book. I love to buy clothes and I often dislike what I have bought almost right away. This gives a comprehensive guide to choosing colors and designing a complete wardrobe. It allows up to 2 years to phase out old and unmatching stuff. The book allows for people who dress casually and are on a moderate budget.

A fantastic addition to a great series.

Night Whispers is definitely one of the greatest Warriors books yet.
It is also the scariest one yet.
*SPOILER ALERt*
The growing drama of the schemes of the dark forest combined with the increasing tension between Ivypaw and Dovepaw as Dovepaw finally discovers that Ivypaw has been trained by Dark Forest warriors and the hatred between ThunderClan and ShadowClan after the battle which claimed the life of the ShadowClan deputy and one of Firestar's lives.

I especially liked that Erin Hunter finally tells the story from another Clan's point of view: Flametail, the ShadowClan medicine-cat apprentice.
Also, we see the beginning of the first relationship inside the clan since Brambleclaw and Squirrelflight. Lionclaw and Cinderheart (a happy continuation for the reincarnation of the former medicine cat Cinderpelt).
And, a returning pattern, Dovepaw meets a cat from a different clan and... If you read the previous books you know how it is.

Overall it is a great book which I thoroughly enjoyed.

Warriors book series is back in action!!

Night Whispers by Erin Hunter is the 3rd book in the Omen of the Stars subseries,and the 24th book in the Warriors series overall,and I am very happy to report,this book is getting back to the heart of the Warriors series. I have been following and reading each Warriors book since the 1st came out years ago. The first two series were amazing,while the 3rd was quite lacking,so i was quite skeptical when Omen of the Stars was released. i was falling out of love with the cats. Thankfully,Omen of the Stars Book 1 surprised me and was better than any in the Power of Three. Then the second came,also better than any in power of three. So i was cautiosly optimisitc about Night Whispers. After reading it,I can now say Warriors is back! The book wastes no time in starting off with high intensity drama. Ending moments after Fading Echoes,tensions are high between the clans. Specifically ShadowClan and ThunderClan. The 3 young cats,Lionblaze,Jayfeather,and Dovepaw of Thunderclan seek to find out more about their strange destiny in a prophecy told years ago to Firestar,leader of Thunderclan. One thing I greatly enjoyed about Night Whispers,is the fact that stuff is actually starting to happen. The 3 cats destinys are beginning to be shown and given hints about. I am already formulating theories about what will happen and for once in a book series,i have literally no clue what will happen. i am very excited to see what will happen. There are many ominous signs of destruction being presented to all 4 clans as the Dark Forest warriors(cats who betrayed their clans that died)start preparing for battle. It's next to impossible to put this book down with all the thoughts that fly through your head about what might happen. The past 8 books were vague and never really revealed ANYTHING about the prophecy,but this book starts to throw hints at us. ANother thing i enjoyed was something most fans,me included, have been wanting. A cat's perspective outside of Thunderclan(besides Stormfur and Feathertail in series 2). The cat is ShadowClan's medicine cat,Flametail who i came to think was a great character. It was nice to see for once what cats out of Thunderclan thought about them. Flametail has a hard journey and I will not spoil anything but this adventure is exicting to say the least. The scenes are still vivid and detailed,the action is fast and brutal,and the characters are likeable and realistic(or s realistic as talking cats can be). I eagerly look foward to Book 4 of Omens of the Stars. Night Whispers showed how much punch the Warriors series can still pack

Warriors Omen of the Stars #3 Night Whispers

Never mind if you are an adult, if you are a cat lover this book - and every other one in the Warriors Series - is for you. The plot is wonderful and the cats are so real that you can look at your own cats and find a clan member who fits each and everyone. Maybe the thing I love best is the added insight into my cats. It is impossible to put the book down and too long a wait for the next book in the series. As you read, you come to know the cats and they all become very real, you are there with them and cheering them on. You cry if one of them dies, worry over newborn kits, share the highjinks of the 'paws' and send prayers with the warriors.
