Good book, lots of tips

I'm a homeowner who is getting ready to re-wire a home. I have the 4th edition of this book and decided to get the updated 5th addition since it includes updates for the 2014 NEC code cycle, which my area has adopted (I still have to look up the local amendments).

This is a good book for a homeowner who is going to be wiring/re-wiring a house, or someone who is learning about electrical installations. It is not a substitution for knowing the NEC or hiring a qualified electrician, but is a good reference. There are other books that I have to supplement this resource, such as a copy of the NEC, the Black and Decker "Complete guide to wiring" as well as some older reference materials. This book by far has a lot of good tips, tricks, and experience packed in that the other books do not contain.

Couple notes:
(- 1/2 star) One of the key points in chapter 6 is a note about shop tools and freezers not being permitted to be in front of GFCI receptacles, but there is no elaboration on this bullet point in this chapter, nor in the GFCI Chapter.

Also the stocking up section would be much better if he used total footage for the supplies rather than the number of rolls (since 1000' rolls of 12/2 and 14/2 wire are sold). Maybe a note about using these 1000' spools in comparison to the 250' rolls would be helpful too.

(- 1/2 star) With expanded use of AFCI in the 2014 NEC, some areas of the home (specifically the Kitchen) require both AFCI and GFCI protection, and there are no tips, sage advice, or strategies outlined on this topic, which is disappointing given that there is so much other good, useful and handy tips he provides. Perhaps due to the lack of actual installations that he has 1st hand experience with.

Overall:
I do recommend this to anyone involved with building, remodeling, or retrofitting a home's wiring system. The technical information you can find in most how-to books, like the Black and Decker book, or the Wiring 1-2-3 book from home depot. This book really shines when it comes to the knowledge, tips, and tricks that Rex shares as part of his experience from being an electrician. It also has a comprehensive chapter on Grounding, which is more detailed than any other book I've seen to date.

Nice Overview of Wiring A Well Pump, Main and Sub Panels, Etc.

My wife and I built our house this past year, plumbed it, and then wired it entirely using this book. We did every bit of the wiring, from laying the buried line to the house, wiring the well pump, wiring first a temporary service panel then our main panel, and wiring up all the receptacles, lights, smoke alarms, and appliances in the house.

And here's the important part: we passed all of our electrical inspections with flying colors.

Note that Rex Caultwell also has a plumbing book, and in my opinion both are invaluable books. The thing that amazes me is that a regular person with very little wiring experience can actually wire an entire house -- as we did! -- following the careful instructions of such a book. We tend to think that experts are required for such tasks. That's just not the case if you read up on a topic and really apply yourself.

This book changed my life, in a very real sense, in that I'm now confident that I can wire just about anything. It's that good of a book.

I would suggest reading this book cover-to-cover, and then supplementing that with perusal of a few more books. I say this because it's impossible to learn something as complex and involved as wiring from just one book.

Wiring a House: 5th Edition is Well Written and Remarkably Useful.

I have many years of DIY electrical remodeling and repair experience, but have never wired a new home. I bought this book to help me prepare to wire a new home we are building, including compliance with the new AFCI requirements. It is intuitively organized and employs crisp, plain language. It is apparent to me that the author's claim at p. 6 of his Introduction is true: "It is a book written by an electrician who has been there, got his hands dirty, and done the work." Cauldwell is also a clear thinker and writer, who included in this book the thorough instruction I was hoping to obtain. I give it 5 stars without reservation.

Solid translation

A randy look at greek history

Lysistrata, wife of an influential Athenian has had it with 20+ years of war with Sparta and calls on her sisters from around Greece (including Sparta) to plot to end the war once and for all. The two-pronged plan is elegant in its simplicity: take over the treasury so that no more money can be spent on war, and deny their husbands marital congress until they agree to make peace with each other. The beauty of the play (and what makes it enjoyable to the 21st century reader) is that it speaks to the most basic needs of the human condition while allowing the reader to freely translate the action to modern times. Part of the fun is envisioning the staging of this play - the battle between the women and the graybeards (a slightly distressing scene since my acquisition of an AARP card) - and the approach of the envoys for the peace talks whose obvious sexual distress assures the women of the impending success of their plan provoked an image that actually had me laughing out loud. All in all, it helps support the notion that the classics can be (and should be) fun.

About the Author
Dorothy Barnhouse is the coauthor of the Heinemann title What Readers Really Do. She has built her professional life around her love of reading and writing. A freelance editor and writer for many years, she began teaching through a fellowship at the Teachers College Reading and Writing Project. She is currently a literacy consultant working in elementary, middle, and high schools in New York City and across the country. Dorothy also teaches graduate and undergraduate writing workshops and has received several grants for her writing, including one from the New York Foundation for the Arts. Vicki Vinton is a literacy consultant and writer who has worked in the New York City public schools and in districts around the country for over fifteen years. With her fellow literacy consultant Dorothy Barnhouse, she is the author of What Readers Really Do: Teaching the Process of Meaning Making (Heinemann, 2012), which has been called "the best book...about reading in the age of the Common Core" (Kim Yaris of Literacy Builders) and a book that helps "think through the Common Core talk about close reading and text complexity" (Franki Sibberson of the National Council of Teachers of English). Her other books include The Power of Grammar: Unconventional Approaches to the Conventions of Language (Heinemann, 2005), co-authored with Mary Ehrenworth of the Teachers College Reading & Writing Project, and the novel The Jungle Law (MacAdam/Cage, 2005). Wonderful

I never felt comfortable with the traditional ways of teaching annotation and monitoring comprehension (e.g., questions, connections, etc.). They seemed too unlike what good readers *actually* do when reading and too cumbersome. They keep students outside of the text.

This book, on the other hand, presents a strategy that encourages students to really dig into a text, to struggle with meaning making, and to monitor their comprehension in a way that feels much more authentic and seamless. There are fewer vocabulary words to teach--another thing that can get between the student and the act of meaning making. All you have to remember is "What do I know?" "What do I wonder?" "What patterns am I noticing?"

I used the strategies with my 9th graders this year, and I love the results I have gotten.

Readers Who Teach

Dorothy Barnhouse and Vicki Vinton have written a generous, practical book, fascinating not only for educators but for all who are interested in the ways that readers make meaning. What Readers Really Do presents a holistic, text-centered approach to the teaching of reading, focusing on the ways in which we create connections and the ways that writers lead us to these understandings. I found it to be a truly heartening book. At a time when so much of the way we teach is compartmentalized, What Readers Really Do looks instead at the mysteries inherent in good writing, the importance of experiencing and learning from those moments of "not knowing", and the ways we can help students to look deeply to gain meaning from the books they read.

This book will give you a great deal to think about concerning the process of reading. It is a book all teachers should read to understand what it means to truly read. It will help you explain the process to parents so that they can better support their child's reading.

"'Chickenneckers' are city folk who come to Maryland's Eastern Shore with crab traps and chicken necks for bait. They crowd the bridge railings, docks, and public landings. The local people wish they would go away. This book is about the 'line between insiders and outsiders, between the excluders and the excluded.' In 1974, Jim Rouse, developer of Maryland's planned city, Columbia, announced his intention to build a similar community on the Eastern Shore's Wye Island. The alternative to his carefully conceived plan was a set of cookie-cutter subdivisions. But the same people who resented the chickenneckers wanted no part of Rouse's concept of the future. Gibbons describes Wye Island and its environs, its history, and its people with skill and objectivity. The book is excellent in all respects and should be read by those who care about the future of our communities." -- Library Journal, 6/15/1977

"This is not a scientific publication. The book contains no literature citation, it contains no reports on controlled scientific experiment, it contains no data, and there are no conclusions. It is a story of people in conflict over the attempted development of Wye Island, a small isalnd in the Chesapeake Bay off the Maryland Eastern Shore. The story centers around Jim Rouse, the developer of Columbia, Maryland, and other planned cities, and his efforts to develop Wye Isalnd in an environmentally acceptable manner. Jim had spent his boyhood near Wye Island, when the Eastern Shore was primarily rural, and wanted to protect the concept of 'open spaces' in his plan to develop the island for others to enjoy. Arrayed against him and his plan were the 'natives,' who opposed any change that would bring in outsiders, and the 'recent natives' who had moved in, established their estates, panoramic views, and seclusion, but did not anyone else to spoil these for them. In the end, Rouse and his plan were defeated, but Wye Island was saved from being subdivided into five acre lots by the State of Maryland, which purchased the island for open farming. Boyd Gibbons is an excellent writer. Through the use of flashbacks and maps, the reader is given a graphic account of the history of Maryland's Eastern Shore, the trials and tribulations of its early working-class inhabitants -- mostly farmers and fishermen -- and the luxury enjoyed by its rich inhabitants. With this background the reader is better able to understand why the people reacted as they did to Rouse's plan... Wye Island should be on the reading list of anyone involved in land-use planning. It addresses itself to that very nebulous subject of 'socio-economic' impact. While it gives no answers, it does give the planner an insight as to why people react the way they do to proposed changes." -- Journal of Environmental Quality, 1977

A first-rate, beautifully written book

Like Wye Island itself, this book is a real treasure. The story is fascinating and important--involving developers (both progressive and traditional), the varied layers of community residents, and the rich ecology of the Maryland Eastern Shore. But perhaps most striking is the way in which Boyd Gibbons tells this story. His prose is unusually strong and effective. He has a great gift for the apt description, the telling image, as well as for narrative flow. This is a book to read and to keep.

About the Author
Douglas Thiel has instructed philosophy courses for 20 years. He has an unusual background since he served as a Marine in Vietnam and worked in civilian law enforcement. As a philosophy instructor, he sees philosophy as a living enterprise that travels back to the early Greek philosophers who searched for the foundation of knowledge and asked the important questions about "how we ought to live".
