The Best Basis for a Knowledge of Econometrics

I have been a practicing econometrician for a total of about eighteen years in American industry (starting in 1980). I used an earlier version of Johnston in graduate school. The book of Johnston et al is, in my view, the very best place to start studying econometrics, and a great place to return to. As a practitioner, I know how valuable this book truly is. There are others of its ilk, but this one book will give the reader a very solid foundation in econometrics. In my experience, this is the bedrock on which my knowledge of econometrics rests.

It all goes down to academics Vs. real life!

This book is great if you are willing to pursue a career in the academics, i.e. you want to be a researcher with a decent and strong background in applied methods.
If, like me, you just got into a graduate (or undergraduate) program trying to learn and understand the basics necessary for a job out there, this book will be your nightmare. Go for Gujarati instead, or anything else more focused on time-series or panel data, whatever you're more interested in.
I no way diminishing the book, which, as everyone else pointed out already, it's great. But for us average joes who just happened to get into economics (Applied Economist myself... oh! the irony!) because we find it thrilling, challenging, but not enough to become phd's, then you'll end up hating this book!
