Describes how to develop general-purpose computer programs for studying the dynamics of multibody systems. This is the only text/reference on the topic that provides complete and systematic treatment and general techniques for the kinematic and dynamic analysis of multibody systems consisting of rigid and deformable bodies. Explains not only how to minimize stresses in such systems, but also how to develop and use computational algorithms for the dynamic analysis of deformable bodies in multibody systems. Contains end-of-chapter problems.

About the Author
Ahmed Shabana was named the Richard and Loan Hill Professor in the Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Department at the University of Illinois at Chicago's College of Engineering. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Iowa in 1982 and worked as a postdoctoral Fellow there before joining UIC in Fall 1983. He is internationally known for his research contributions in the areas of large-scale computations as applied to dynamic and multibody systems such as vehicles, machines, and robots. Professor Shabana is the author of four books and has published more than 260 papers including 130 journal papers and 130 conference papers, presentations, and technical reports. He has maintained, over the years, a steady stream of research funding (a total of $3.5 million) from the Federal Railroad Administration, Army Research Office and National Science Foundation, as well as other agencies and companies. In addition, Professor Shabana has supervised the work of 31 Ph.D. students, 30 MS students and 26 visiting scholars and postdoctoral Fellows. He has served on the editorial board of several journals, and he is the Founding Chair of the ASME Technical Committee on Multi-Body Systems and Nonlinear Dynamics. He has also served as a member of several national and international committees. He is a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). Professor Shabana received several awards, which include an Honorary Doctorate Degree from Lappeenranta University of Technology (Finland), the Fulbright Research Scholar Award, and the Humboldt Prize.

Classic Book on Multibody Dynamics

This is a well written work with a minimum of "it is left up to the student to prove" or "It is easily verified". The author proceeds from rigid body nomenclature and the non-linear effects of multibody motion, thru a brief overview of elasticity as related to multi-body dynamics and applies both to a good understanding of flexible multi-body dynamics. This is truly a classic work and it is very unfortunate that it is out of print. I would recommend this book to anyone who needs a firm foundation in the mathematics of multi-body dynamics.

The past and the future

In my thesis I used multibody approach to describe a railway wheelset motion in the three dimensional space; many of the lectures I had where based on Shabana's work and I found them very useful. Actually I'm involved in developing fast small mechanism (to be used on electrical circuit breakers) and I need to go further in knowing how to manage system dynamics through multibody systems; the main reason why I decided to buy this book is that I'd like to better understand some of the aspects that during my studies I had to get 'as they are' and this book seems to answer my questions
